I thought it was odd as well but Richard said it still connects "on the back end;" which seems like the only reason it would do that is to transmit the data on how many kb were synced. I did sync the device and the display repeatedly popped up telling me the phone was not on, did I want to connect. A few seconds after I would choose no, it would come up again. Makes me wonder if it wasn't trying to connect to report the syncing, even though I have not activated the phone yet.

There is no fee for transferring data from your PDA directly to your PC. There is no way for Verizon to track the data usage. Infact, there is no network usage. I work for another PCS company as a technician, and I can assure you, they're not able to track data usage from your PDA to PC using a USB connection. "Richard" is full of it, and they want an extra buck.
