I have been a viatalk customer for more than 2 years now.  Recently I decided to move to Vonage because they offer better international calling plans.

When I opened a ticket with Viatalk to cancel my account, they told me about a $50 early termination fee that I was never told about, even when I specifically asked about early termination penalties.  When I renewed, I was told that when I cancel my service, I will be charged for the promotional free months that they give on a pre paid plan (which makes sense) but the person failed to tell me that there is an early termination fee.

Also, there is no mention on this early termination fee when you are signing up for a new service via their website.  Also, there is no mention of any contracts, since early termination fee usually applies to contract scenarios.  Below are they only things that they mention when opening a new account as annotation (there is no mention of early termination fee):

" (1) All ViaTalk lines are subject to a monthly Regulatory Recovery Fee, E911 Cost Recovery Fee as well as any applicable Federal, State or Local taxes. (2) To be eligible for this promotion, the user must be a new ViaTalk customer, or not have had ViaTalk service within the previous 60 days. Offer not valid in combination with any other offers or coupons. While supplies last.

* All lines are subject to a monthly FCC mandated E-911 fee as well as a monthly Regulatory Recovery Fee. Shipping and activation fees apply. "

Talking to their support team (and manager) is useless because whatever you tell them, they keep referring you to this one parah on their TOS page.  They insist that even though I was not told about this early termination fee even when I asked, I will have to pay it because it is mentioned in their TOS.

They want all their customers to read their TOS (terms of service) for all these fine details.  This is a bad business practice with an intention to cheat their customers.

I will not recommend Viatalk to anyone; one for their bad practices and second; for their bad customer service and sound quality.  Please stay away!
