After a year of purchasing a used 2000 Jetta TDI from a used car dealer, the problems began.

The fairing under the car came loose on the interstate, which rolled up under the passenger front wheel and melted the wheel well. After that, the fuel door decided to come open on its own and would not snap shut again.

The window regulator broke on one of the coldest days of the year, forcing us to travel the 30 or so miles to the dealer to have them repair it. We told them of the other problems, but were told we would not be charged for the window, but would be charged for the other defects. We promptly left disgusted.

A week later, the car suddenly lost power. The ability to merge into traffic was lost. No acceleration. The car will barely reach 65 mph in about four minutes of driving. With 67000 miles now incured, we brought it back to Walker Volkswagen of New Orleans only to be charged $75 for an estimate which stated it needed a new fuel injection pump and an air flow meter. Combined that estimate was going to cost us $2200.00.

We decided rather than sink more money into this heap, we would trade it in at another dealership for a new car. That is when the trunk refused to shut and latch.

The appraiser looked it over and drove it. He returned to say he could do absolutely nothing with this lemon. He advised my wife and I to file a lemon law report because he has had this experience with other volkswagen cars.

I am unfimliar with how to actually do this, but with all of the problems we have had with this car, I am willing to learn.

My 2001 Jetta TDI is also a piece of junk

It's good to see, (well, not exactly) that I'm not the only one who feels that VW is turning out sub-standard automobiles, especially as far as the much-vaunted Jetta is concerned. My 2001 TDI has been a pure headache. Aside from the great mileage (I do a considerable amount of distance driving in my occupation), I have nothing good to say about this car, the plant where it was manufactured, or the service I received from various dealerships on the east coast, specifically, the Casey Auto Group in Newport News. But that's another story. I have had to replace the turbo charger twice, the trunk latch twice, the crappy monsoon speakers with distortion twice, have two separate windows fixed when stuck in the down position, lost the engine undercarriage, dealt with a peeling interior, a broken armrest, a faulty hose connecting the turbo to the exhaust manifold and a broken oil dipstick, not to mention the three times the check engine light has come on after losing all acceleration. I've lost the use of the car for almost 40 days, in four separate states, while away on business, and had to put up with the worst customer service I've ever seen (at Casey Auto Group.) They had the gall to post that ridiculous 5 star customer service board by the door. I laughed at the paradox. I want to be rid of this horrible car so bad, but I feel guilty about pawning it off on anyone else. I am also initiating lemon law procedures against VW and their horrible product. Just wanted all of the Jetta (and TDI) owners to know you are not alone.

used car dealers arent always the most honest people in the world

Dear James: I am very sorry to hear about the experience you had with your 2000 VW Jetta TDI. As the owner of a 1998 VW Jetta TDI I must say I have not had the same experience with my car as you have had with yours. Whereas you bought your Jetta from a used car dealership, I bought mine new. Sad as it is to say used car dealers arent always the most honest people in the world. Currently, my Jetta has over 230,000 miles on it. In my opinion this is the best car I have ever owned and as a driver for over 26 years Ive driven many different makes and models of cars from Hondas to Chevys and everything in between. Jet still gets between 46 and 50 mpg highway and runs as good now as it did the day I bought it. Personally, I prefer imports but my hubby being the All-American Redneck that he is prefers Chevys to anything else and had never owned anything other than American automobiles. However, after all the wear and tear my car has endured (over 6000 miles per month) with only a timing belt change for repairs; hubby is so impressed that he is insisting on buying another Jetta or perhaps a Touareg when they introduce the diesel engine next year. Perhaps you bought a car that had been in some kind of accident. Did the dealership provide you with a carfax type of report showing the vehicles history? Please do not let this experience with a previously owned Jet jade your perspective toward the entire car line. Again, I am sorry for your experience, may the next car you buy be as good to you as my Jet has been to me. Best Regards,
