He very clearly stated the 14th was the first available appointment time at the dealership. If the light never came back on the dash he did not do any more harm driving it.

You stated the car overheated on the 10th, you took it in the next day(the 11th); but didnt make an appointment until the 14th? Be happy you dont have MUCH bigger problems!

As an ASE Certified Master Automotive Tech and a warranty administrator I have work with and on VW for years. There is no way that dealer can say the thermostat caused the water pump to fail. Something like this would not hold up in court. There should be no reason they deny the water pump claim.
