Von Fenwald = Caveat Emptor!!!

I also feel that I was ripped off by Cindy Hiemenz. I purchased a 16 week old male GSD in February of 2005 from her. She represented the animal as being the offspring from her dogs. Never ONCE did she bother to mention that she was selling the dog for KDM Kennels (Kenny Myers) out of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ms. Himenz gave me the impression when I spoke to her that my dog was from her dogs. It was only after I received the full paperwork two months after purchase that I found out that he was actually just being sold by her and had not been whelped by one of her females or sired by one of her males. So the feeling I get is that from the start, we would not have been able to breed him, even if we had gotten credentials on him. This was one of the things I specifically mentioned to her about wanting to be able to do with him (breeding).

In addition, the AKC registration I received on this dog included the disclaimer statement "Offspring from this animal cannot be registered with the AKC".

Problems with the "Von Fenwald - KDM" animal include:

Dog cannot be show - Symmetry problems which include markings on one ear and not the other.

Dog cannot be used for breeding - Dog only has one t******e descended. (NOTE: Undescended t******e is an automatic DQ from any AKC show!!!) Cindy says both were down. I checked when he was a pup and it looked to me like only the sack was down. Vet said they would probably descend later. Vet didn't say anything more to me about it until his birthday checkup 6 months later, but then I wasn't really into looking at my dog's testicles every day.

The vet estimates that it will cost me about $1500 - $2000 to have him neutered and the undescended t******e removed to prevent any testicular cancer from the undescended t******e. The process to remove the undescended t******e requires microsurgery in order not to damage blood vessels and nerves.

I learned a lot more about these sort of "Bait and Switch" puppy operations when Kenny Myers of KDM Kennels in Knoxville, TN called me trying to dig up dirt on Von Fenwald after Cindy apparently ripped him off in this business venture as well. Apparently this is a standard practice among more unscrupulous breeders in order to get their dogs into a "name" line. I have reported this to the AKC already.

Cindy wouldn't honor the warranty on the Von Fenwald-KDM dog since no hip X-Ray had taken place within the first month that I had him, while Kenny from KDM said he warranties his dogs for 2 years in which you have to get them X-Rayed. IMHO, both of them are full of doggie doo (or male bovine droppings!) Breeders use this as a selling point, but in reality, hip X-Rays are next to worthless, because even an animal that has been X-rayed in the first year and shown clean can develop hip displasia at age 8. Given, the X-Rays will catch the odd whelp that already has it, but those are rare cases.

In comparison to my experience with Von Fenwald and KDM, I recently purchased another male AKC registered GSD from a LOCAL breeder for a fraction (1/7!!! one seventh!!!)of the price I paid for the one from Cindy. The 2nd dog has both testicles down and locked at 10 weeks. No extraneous markings. No disclaimer on his paperwork about offspring registration, etc. Beautiful animal! We can use him for show or breeding at our leisure without any worries.

I was pestered by Cindy to write a Testimonial for her website right after I purchased the first dog. After discovering the dog's problems, I asked Cindy very nicely to remove my Testimonial. I had to resort to threatening to post my own rebutal website about my problems with Von Fenwald to get her to "remember" to remove it from her website. It took her a month to get it off the website (lame excuse about overlooking it... blah, blah, moo, moo...) Oh, by the way, she does almost DAILY updates on her site.

Now... Don't get me wrong! I wouldn't give up that first GSD for nothing! My wife and I love him dearly! But I don't want another animal from either Von Fenwald or KDM! I'm just here to express my displeasure at being ripped off by this unscrupulous breeder (or breeders...).

We didn't pay the $2500 or $3500 that some folks paid for their dogs. We paid $1750 + $200 shipping, but our receipt says we only paid $1500 (IRS AGENTS: are you reading this???) By the way, we kept ALL paperwork, including cashier's check receipts and copies of the deposit check and shipping paperwork and we will be MORE than happy to supply copies of that paperwork to the proper government agencies and law enforcement officials to assist in any investigations. When I worked with K-9's in the military, we had a little saying: TSGB - Talk $hit, Get Bit! Looks like someone's getting chewed on!

I am glad you let your story be known more, people should take the time. May I ask what you paid for this limited AKC dog? Ms. Hiemenz is not a very pleasant person to deal with at least that was my experience with her. Good Luck.

Communications from both of the breeders involved have now pointed fingers at each other. KDM said Von Fenwald was supposed to honor the warranty and wasn't, Von Fenwald says KDM was supposed to honor the warranty and wasn't. I really don't care about who honors the warranty because I don't want another dog or a refund from either of them! Having seen enough Judge Judy (and done a bit of case history research), cases with warrantied animals usually end up with the animal in question being removed and replaced and then destroyed which is NOT what we want. We love our 1st GSD very much, it's just a shame we can't breed him because he is a handsome, very well mannered, and well behaved dog. This complaint was posted to shine a light on the practices of these two breeders. My wife and I were ripped off and we don't want other people to go through what we are going through. I cannot file a complaint against KDM Kennels, since I legally never dealt with them, which in the terms of use of this board would consist of a false complaint. Please judge the facts for yourselves. The point that KDM Kennels is being mentioned at all is to provide ALL the facts surrounding this complaint. For P in Colorado: Thanks for the advice! Will try to follow it.

X-raying your GSD

#12Consumer Comment

Fri, May 12, 2006

Hello, I feel I need to respond to your comments that x-rays are worthless because a dog that is not dysplastic at a year can be at 8. I disagree, a lot of large breed dogs' skeletal structures are not finished growing at a year of age. That is why the only type of xray rating that you can get at that age is a premliminary rating. Preliminary ratings can change but the percentage of dogs that happens to is only around 6.2%. 93.8% of the dogs that receive a normal (fair, good, or excellent) rating at 1 year will receive a normal rating at 2 years. At 8 years of age, you are getting into the realm of old-age arthritis which is NOT dysplasia. Before you breed your new boy, have you considered getting the other recommended certifications for him? In addition to Hip Dysplasia, GSD's suffer from Elbow Dysplasia, OCD, several different heart ailments - most of which can kill, von Willebrand's Disease (vWD) - which can kill, and several eye ailments that can cause blindness. There is NO way for you to know if your new boy has these disorders just by looking at him. A veterinarian cannot tell you if your dog has these disorders simply by looking at him, unless he has been specially trained to do so, for example, a canine eye doctor or cardiologist. The best tool you have is the specific test for a specific disorder. Unless you take steps to ensure that your boy is as healthy as possible, you could be passing on some deadly and/or devastating disorders to his puppies and not even know it until someone comes back to you with it.
