I signed up for Vonage. Various problems with my own house wiring and internet connections resulted in my realizing I had to stay with Quest. Easy, I thought. I will just cancel Vonage since I had not activated the account yet. I called Vonage and they said that it would cost me $36.00 to cancel. I protested. They said, if I just waited two months, I could cancel for free. Since my service for two months would be $26.00 I decided to wait. Just as the two months passed I called Vonage to cancel. The representative absolutely refused to cancel my account, offering me in the course of a 25 minute conversation every conceivable excuse (you were referred to technical assisstance, you agreed to two months of service, we can offer you a lower rate, etc. etc. etc.) and each time I said No, I want to cancel. After 15 minutes of this inanity I lost and started yelling to cancel my account. After several more minutes of excuses she finally informed me that I owed them $36 in billing and $39 to cancel. I told them there was no way I was going to pay it. They said they already had my credit card number. I said that card number is no longer in service. They said they would send it to collections. I said go ahead, I'll send it to the Atty. General consumer fraud. Do NOT get Vonage.

#2Consumer Suggestion

Helen, I have just filed a ripoff report because the exact same thing has happend to me recently. My report should be showing up soon, I want you to read it. Even though I have come to the realization that I must pay that cancellation fee, I feel like Vonage has not only LIED to me, but as a reslut created unwanted stress and stolen precious time from me. I feel like I was cheated, as you may also feel. Let's fight this together, and see if justice can't be had! I want a lawyer to look at our case, any suggestions? Thanks Martin

Helen, You wrote: They said, if I just waited two months, I could cancel for free. I do not work for Vonage, have never used Vonage and I do not ever plan on getting Vonage. The statement by one of their customer service reps that you can cancel for free after two months is ridiculous. I am sure the Vonage rep made a false statement just to get you to keep your account open, which unfortunately, he/she was successful. I hate to tell you but since two months have passed since your Vonage installation, you are obligated to pay what is on your Vonage account. Similarily, if you terminate your cell phone account before the usual two-year agreement, you have to pay the penalty ($150 - $250 depending on the carrier). http://www.vonage.com/features_terms_service.php?lid=footer_terms&refer_id=WEBTS0706010001W1#LENGTH 6.1 Service Term. We provide our service for terms of a set length that depend on the term that you have signed up for (for example, 30 days, one year, and two years). Your term begins on the subscription date, which is the date you first ordered service or the date we successfully process your payment, whichever is later. It is not the day you receive the equipment you ordered or the first time you use the service. You are purchasing our service for the full service term. 6.5 Fees upon disconnection. (a) Disconnection by you. If you attempt to disconnect service before the end of your current service term, you will be responsible for all the charges for your current term, including unbilled charges, plus any disconnection fee. In addition, if you disconnect service that is based on a commitment before the end of the commitment, you agree to pay us the applicable recovery fee.
