Wachovia offers "free" checking however, once your account drops to a low balance or gets overdrawn, the checkcard/debitcard will allow you to continue making purchases, never declining a single purchase while the bank pops you with a $30 fee per transaction. If this happens during a period after you've made a deposit and you assume the deposit has cleared (even cash), you can overdraw your account and not even know it.

I made a cash deposit in the morning, thinking my money was available, I used my card as did my husband. Before we knew it, we were up to $300.00 in fees charged. A week later, after another cash deposit, we were into it for another $300.00.

I called customer service and the representatives are so unbelievably nasty. I was informed it was my responsibility to know my balance, however it is not their responsibility to post my cash deposit as a CASH deposit.

I called the manager of this local branch and she explained to me how the card will not decline ("unfortunately" she says) and to the customers detriment, can continue to make purchases despite being well into the negative. I'm seeing red. I don't know how these thieves sleep at night.

I think the reason you are having a problem with this bank is batch vs. realtime mode.

Some banks, and it seems to be the larger ones, update their electronic files once a day. This means that even when you make a cash deposit, it wont be until the nightly update that the funds appear as available. A bank that runs in a realtime mode will show the funds immediately. My credit union, which is decidely smaller than a bank shows funds real time. This difference in modes is why many people (who dont keep track of their balance) have a problem with POS transactions. For instance, last night at midnight you had a balance of $300. This number is sent in the POS file. When the bank opened this morning, your rent check for $275 cleared. At the same time your check is clearing, you are shopping. When your purchase for $50 is approved you assume that you are golden, when in fact you are about to get slammed by overdraft fees. You might ask them the question whether they run in realtime or batch, it will help you to plan accordingly. One last note, I find you almost always do better at a credit union, for fees, service and a generally better deal for consumers.

Never did I say I write checks because I don't. I use the card. I make cash deposits so that I do not have to wait for my money. I have never once overdrawn my account because I did not have the funds available. When you make a cash deposit, you can make a withdrawal on those funds, but you cannot purchase off of the cards until a certain period of time. The teller is trained to tell you that your funds are available which is only a half truth, it's only available to withdraw from, not purchase from. I have told the truth. I never had this problem with Bank Atlantic or my beloved Credit Union whom I love dearly and would never had opened an account with Wachovia if I still lived near a Bank Atlantic or a branch of my Credit Union. I manage my money well and have excellent credit. Perhaps you should learn to read before you go off and accuse someone of dishonesty. I filed this report to make others aware of unethical practices and loopholes designed to rip people off. The interesting thing about this, I've had Wachovia employees agree with me and feel terrible about what has happened but their hands are tied. They aren't allowed to actually help the customer.

Why don't you tell the truth?

You are under the delusion that free checking means use our money and we won'r charge you anything. Everytime you make a deposit it is going to pay off your fees and then if there is anything left it will go into your account. If you have 300.00 in fees and deposit 300.00 why would you think you have any money? You probably still owe the bank the amount thet you are overdrawn. It is your responsibility to maintain your balance. Not all transactions can hit your balance immediately so how can the bank decline it if it doesn't even know you spent it already? The bank also has no way of knowing what checks you have outstanding. Do you think a little fairy runs to the bank and tells them you wrote a check the second you wrote it??? Quit complaining just because you obviously have no concept on how to handle money and quit blaming someone else.....
