I agree with a previous posting-- people in fast food are basically idiots-- that's just the reality of things. But why are fast food workers so stupid that they can't comprehend simple grade school math. I can't understand why people that work in fast food are the biggest idiots in society. After going to a wendy's where I kept receiving cold hard burgers, I called back to ask if they could replace my next burger.

The guy on the phone said he could and when I went there to get the burger replaced, I told him that I was going to get a different burger this time because of the bad experiences and that I'll just pay the difference of the burger which ended up being around a dollar. He first disagreed and said that I could just replace the burger, but I insisted that I want a different burger. He then began to do the math and instead of charging me the difference for the burger, he took the difference off. After adding up everything I ordered and giving me the total I explained to him that he was incorrect in his calculations. He then began to argue telling me that I was wrong. And this guy was the "manager." This is the experience everyone I know has with these idiots who work in fast food -- usually they're very arrogant, very stupid, and very uneducated and lack brainpower and mental ability of all kinds.

I just find it frustrating that even the Manager of this place couldn't do simple grade school addition and subtraction .. because the guy was so insistent and arrogant about his miscalculations and poor math skills, I just said forget it, he then insisted to give me like a nickel which he thought was the difference I was fussing about. Even though it was just a dollar, it's just the principle regarding the absolute stupidity and arrogance of these people. The guy still thought he was 'right' and that I was the one who was incorrect and that's just frustrating when you're an educated citizen who is dealing with middle aged people who are less intelligent mathematically than most 10 year olds.

This isn't just a one time thing -- fast food workers are constantly proving that intellectually they are one step below others, while believing that they are actually really smart and are right in their ignorant decisions or ideas. Many fast food workers are really arrogant or maybe just angry people and tend to take their anger out on customers. I for one am just tired of dealing with their arrogance and stupidity and most of them just need to grow up, get some class, manners, customer service skills and a GOOD education...

Like Dave said above... watch the movie "Waiting" and think about it everytime you go to ANY kind of restaraunt thinking that yelling and screaming will solve everything. I am a manager and I will almost always give the nice customers and complete refund and free food if they have any kind of problem. It's those people I want to deal with on a day to day basis. It's the people who yell and scream and swear that I will give aboslutely NO refund to, even if it is something awful. There is NO way I want them to come back to my store, even if it is on a better day.

Nicole, I find it interesting how you are offended by people thinking that fast food workers are dumb and uneducated ... yet you make a point to state that those who attend "government schools" are "poorly educated." Don't you think that your own comments would be found offensive to many people? Next time you want to take offense to something someone says, you might want to avoid offending others in the process. Perhaps you would understand this if you were intelligent and did not work at McDonalds. (sic)

Ok... I will probably be called "stupid" for this. But I worked fast food up until a few months ago. (I know work as a waitress). I am not stupid. I am no idiot. I am a college student. My parents cannot afford to pay for my college, and although I recieve academic scholarships, it does not cover my private school tuition. So, I took the only job that was hiring at the time. McDonalds. Did I like it? No. Was it ideal? Oh, never. I am offended that you would suggest that everyone who works in fast food is a blithering idiot. This is simply not true. However, as to the "manager" that could not add or subtract, is it possible that you were wrong? Maybe there was some sort of special on the particular hamburger you ordered. Maybe the register rang up the price wrong. You do not know. Maybe he had a developmental disorder. Maybe he was just tired. Or, maybe he went to government schools and was poorly educated. If you want to change this, I suggest you do something constructive instead of insulting working class citizens. I understand your right to free speech, so I will not say that you cannot make your uneducated, offensive, and blanket statements, but you should not. You should try to help people who do not know. Stupidity is one thing, ignorance is another. Stupidity is self inflicted, ignorance is not their fault. Now, of course, your first response will be to call me stupid, but remember, you cannot make change by being rude and name calling. You only make yourself look like a small child. For those of you reading this who may be in the position of the manager Melissa is talking about, take heart. You can do for yourself. Hold your head high and know that you are not what she says. You are a hard worker. You are in the most disregarded and disrespected occupation. And yet, if it were not for you, they would not have their food. Love and peace. A good motto to live by: (borrowed from another RipoffReport... cannot remember whose... if this is yours, I love it... and sorry for not citing you!) A man who knows, and knows he knows, is wise. Follow him. A man who knows, and knows not he knows, is asleep. Awaken him. A man who knows not, and knows he knows not, is unlearned. Teach him. A man who knows not, and knows not he knows not, is a fool. Shun him.

I take offense to everyone out there that get upset at fast food resturants crews and then lump us all together that we are dumb. I know business people, factory workers, lawyers, doctors that are so dumb they wouldn't come in out of the rain. Don't blame the peson because they cant do simple math. Blame their parents, and the school system they were enrolled. These are the people that were suppose to teach the youth how do to the math. I'm sure if you would look at your life there are somethings that you can't and others would call you an idiot.

While I agree that it is irritating when your order is wrong and then they screwed up while doing the math you need to worry about the important things in life. My concern when eating out at ANY restaurant is that the food is cooked properly and that, hopefully, the staff washed their hands after using the toilet. A few errors in my order or having to wait while someone does math is their head, is not a big deal. BTW, in your situation I have always been given a full refund and have recieved a meal at n/c. The restaurants know that is a small price to pay to ensure their customers keep coming back.

Definately Lighten Up

#11UPDATE Employee

Tue, August 15, 2006

You definately need to lighten up a little. I'm an Assistant Manager at a Wendys and I consider myself fairly educated. Yes, there are other managers at my store who are complete morons and I even wonder how they got to that position, but you need to understand that everyone has their strong points. Maybe Manager A can't add 2+3, and yes, somedays they have trouble... but it's not everyone that is a moron. I have employees that are making minimum wage, and they are the best people I've ever worked with, even if they have trouble with basic math. Why don't we pay people more and hire smarter people? We can't. Granted, some stores are able to pay their workers $10 an hour, but stores like mine can only pay them the minimum wage of $6.50. Fast Food chains like Wendys or McDonalds have a lot of bills to pay including operating costs (electricity and other bills), food costs (how much we pay for food compared to how much we make), and labor (how much we pay people to work compared to our net sales). Food Cost is very high in a fast food chain because it isn't cheap to make the food that we sell. We constantly have the pressue to give super-fast service which is usually 90 seconds from the second someone pulls into the drive-thru pad, to the time they leave. EVERY DAY we deal with stupid customers that take 3 minutes to look at the menu then mess up their whole order, and order items that we don't even sell. Every day I deal with customers that come through and ask for milk shakes, big macs, whoppers, and so on. I'm sorry, but is it SO hard for people to order items that we ACTUALLY sell? Is it so hard for a group of people to come inside and NOT leave a mess? Is it so hard for a customer to understand how mentally frustrating our job is? I agree that manager you spoke to was a complete moron! What would I have done? Given them whatever they wanted and refunded their money. Why? We can make more money from a customer if we show that we actually care, and we'll do what we can for them to be pleased. You can go to any fast food chain and get crappy service and maybe some stores are continuously worse then others. But don't say that all fast food workers are idiots. Some people like the job, even if they aren't making the most money, like myself. I like not having to be stuck in an office all day long, I like not having to work Monday thru Friday 9-5, I like being able to move around and interact with other people. As stressful as it may be for both the workers, and customers. Both sides need to give in a little and take some time to understand. If you get bad service at a certain store, go somewhere else. If another store has bad service, maybe that area isn't run well. My franchise runs our stores VERY well and if we get a manager or a crew member that deals with customers like they did to you, we can their a**, easy as that. I'm sorry if you had a bad experience, and I'll admit I'd be as pissed as you. But don't take it out on EVERYONE in fast food. Maybe you're just one of those customers that we try to get rid of and yes, I do it. Some customers aren't worth our money, they cost more money to keep in our store then it is worth. It's not worth paying me, to deal with a bad customers, and continuously having to give them free food and so on, if they are never going to be satisfied. Like I tell any of my workers when they are freaking out, "It's just Wendys." It's not worth freaking out about.

Response for Melissa

#12UPDATE Employee

Sat, May 27, 2006

Melissa: You are a very passionate person, I can say that! But, I believe your generalization of the folks that you apparently rely on to make your food as idiots may be just a little harsh. I agree that this industry generally attracts those who may lack a higher education, and sometimes even a personality. The founder of the company didn't even finish high school- but became more successful than most. So I think the problem you faced might not have been attributed to that individual's intelect, but maybe a training issue. Maybe the person was new, and simply didn't know what to do. I assume you do some type of work, or have, remember, you were new once too! I am a manager for this company, and have been for several years. I'm proud of the work I do, and try to make my store the best it can be. I can only do that when I have properly trained employees, and usually those employees are either young, and in some cases, mentally challenged. I like to consider myself well educated, and quite successful. I hope I model that to the younger employees and that no matter what career path they may choose, I hope I set a good example on how to treat people, and do a good job. While there is no excuse for what happened to you, I think sometimes rather than going on at length about a problem, we need to step back, as mature adults and try to come up with a better solution to a problem. You said in your original complaint that the manager applied the difference toward your purchase, I wonder if he was maybe trying to credit the difference because of their mistake? If that was the case, then maybe your complaint should be more of thanks and praise. But I don't know the whole situation. In any case, maybe a visit to another location would be more enjoyable.

lol you are truly STUPID harry. You don't have to be a GENIUS to be able to do simple math or have decent customer skills and a good attitude. Yes the majority of people in fast food are idiots, and accepting it isn't the solution. High horse?? you are truly a moron just like them if you think that people complaining and angry over bad experiences and situations are being arrogant. Idiots like you and people in fast food like to ruin people's experiences, and those fighting against jerks like them aren't being 'arrogant.' The next time someone's attitude annoys you keep telling yourself you're 'freaking' out. You're truly an idiot just like the people i'm complainign about. You wouldn't know how to judge a situation if someone smacked you with some sense. I think you need some serious lessons in morality you are a major imbecile. And take your fast food worker friends with you so that you ALL can learn what decency and fairness is. Your ignorant comments won't get you anywhere. lol next thing you know you'll be telling a mother who's angry at someone hurting their child that they're being arrogant. You are truly a sick minded idiot so go post your ignorance where there are IGNORANT people who care for it... you are PATHETIC.

How sad it is.....

That there are people like you that think they are better than others. I'm very sorry that you've had a bad experience in customer service, but if you obviously had problems at that location before, then you should not have returned and filed a complaint instead with their head office. You are totally overreacting to such a small insignificant moment in your life that it's actually kind of funny how you're basically 'freaking out'. In my experience, most people in customer service are not geniuses but that doesn't give you the right to generalize that ALL of them are "the biggest idiots in society/very arrogant, very stupid, and very uneducated and lack brainpower and mental ability of all kinds." I'm sure many of us have known people or have even worked themselves in the industry and it's not acceptable to look down on these people and think that you're better than them. We're all human after all and each of us are different and shouldn't be chastised for something that we're not as good at as someone else. As far as fast food clerks being rude, I can't say it's ever happened to me, but I've seen it happen to other people and I'll tell you this-Most of the time the person on the receiving end deserves it because they come off with the attitude that they are better than the person standing behind the counter. Haven't you ever heard that you should treat others as you would be treated? So why don't you lighten up a little? It's not the end of the world to have a couple of bad experiences in customer service and you really should face the fact that these people aren't going anywhere. Learn to live with it and get off your high horse.
