You claim you had all of these 'safe driving' miles under your belt yet you allowed the person that was not behind the wheel to be the driver? Im sorry that is inexcuseable. Although your trainer may have said that, you should have stopped...evaluated the situation and if you didnt agree with him, stop the truck in a safe place, contact Safety and let them handle it. Plenty of students do it ALL the time. Driving a rig is too safety sensitive to blame others for your own actions, whether he told you to do it or not. You are a grown man and that is YOUR CDL, not a trainers and is not worth putting at risk. You even said that you were unsure...well you should have had better judgement.
