I have purchased 5 WD3200 disk drives in the last month from 3 different retailers. All three advertise 3 year warranty and Western Digital advertises the same 3 year warranty for the drive.

When you register the drive you are not given 3 years of warranty, but anywhere from 13 months to 30 months. You give them the date of purchase, but they ignore it and use some ficticious manufacturing date. The first two drives were given 13 months warranty because over a year ago they changed the warranty to 3 years and they claim they do not know that you purchased the drive after that date. However, the manufacturing date on both drives was around April of this year, which means it could not have been purchased over a year ago.

The last three drives have a manufacturing date of April 2008, yet they were given 30 months of warranty.

If you call them, they say all you have to do is to send them the sales receipt and they will update the warranty date. I spoke to two different technical support specialists (one a supervisor) who said they would update the warranty on the drives, but that was not done.

One person even told me it must be a mistake in their website. Really, the warranty was changed over a year ago and the website has not been updated. I was also told that my drive really only had a 1 year warranty, but I still have the box that says 3 years warranty on it.

WD has decided to short everyone's warranty unless you happen to catch it when you register the drive. This is a true ripoff. Even though they offer a remedy, it depends on you doing work to make them comply.

I am disgusted.

I had to scan all of my receipts, attach them as pdfs and e-mail them. I also had to find the serial numbers for all of the drives (even though they were already in their database with the purchase dates.) I should not have had to go through all of this to get what was advertised.
