Being in that position stinks and as with any company there will be sour experiences. Having been part of this industry for 20 years and having represented VZW for over 10 years I may be able to give you some solutions if this occurs again with any company you deal with.
Firstly I would have made sure I informed the owner and gave the them the chance to make it right.
If you have no luck there then the Wireless Zone parent company would want to know about it (Middletown, CT) and may lend help.
The same applies for the "right person" at Verizon. It would need to be escalated beyond a customer service rep though.
The key is that if you were truly hung out to dry for no good reason the right representative will want to and be able to help make it right.
