In Fiscal Year 2018, I attempted to personally arrange an appointment with the University of Colorado Hospital (UNHealth) for an allergy issue. However, it was quickly researched  and rejected by the clinic hospital  lead. The request was sent back to the medical provider for approval which was authorized. Effective August 1, 2021, I became eligible for Medicare benefits. On August 3, 2021, I  contacted UCHealth in Aurora, CO in reference to scheduling  a procedure.  During the conversation with UCHealth they systematically referred the procedure to the VA. They refused to accept Medicare and stated that the "only way I could get the procedure done was a referral from the VA." The UCHealth Patient Advocate office had to be contacted concerning the issue. On August 9, 2021 UCHealth approved the procedure. Two physicians at UCHealth approved the procedure in writing. After the approval there was no additional exchange of communications concerning any billing issues. In January 2022 UCHealth completed the procedure. Afterwards, I was not told that I had acquired the entire cost of the bill. Months later I began to receive a bill for the procedure that had been approved by UNHealth. I have received several invoices with different amounts and phone calls requesting payment. They are expecting me to pay for a procedure that was approved by two physicians, patient advocate office, and clinic lead.

The hospital only checks your insurance as a convenience to you.  You are obligated to pay for anything that your insurance doesn't cover.  Doctors evaluate the MEDICAL necessity of whatever treatment you are getting, not whether your insurance will pay for it.  And it sounds like they didn't want to do whatever you wanted to do, but you insisted.  Now you have to either pay or have your credit rating destroyed.
