In the middle of September I was involved in a car wreck and knew that 1) I wouldn't be using a gym membership for a long time and 2) I really needed to save money. So I submitted to cancel my gym membership.

I knew that I couldn't get any money back for the remaining portion of my month.

What I didn't realize was that they won't cancel my member ship until 0 days after I requested it to be cancelled. This means that I had to pay for another months worth of dues that I wouldn't be using. When I called to complain the representative told me that it was in my member contract. This may be true, but it doesn't mean it isn't completely unfair and unethical. The 30 day policy means that, no matter what, every person who ever cancels their membership has to pay an additional months worth of dues.

I plan on stopping by the gym several times up until the last date of the billing cycle I have involuntarily paid for to make sure that my membership is still active. If I am denied entrance, I will seek legal counsel.

Also, I read an article saying that the member contract didn't include proper language to explain this course until 2006; several people in California won a class action lawsuit because of this. I became a member in 2005. I will be investigating this further. I have contact with multiple attourneys and will see if any of them believe this is grounds for a class action lawsuit.

OK, seriously dude, it's time to get with it a little bit. Read your contracts a little better and get over it, it's a months worth of dues, at least it's not a year or something. It will cost you well over the months worth of dues to hire an attorney and all that jazz.

The reason businesses have contracts is to be consistent with everyone. If you didn't like the policy, you shouldn't have joined. It does take them at least a little time to delete your records and stop your billing, especially when they use another billing company. They're not sitting around waiting for you to call or go by so they can immediately cancel you. You've contacted "several attorneys"? Get over it.
