I bought a 2005 yfz 450 and had riding it 9 times at the sand dunes in oregon. On my last outing I was going and the eng locked up. When returning to their shop I was told that I would have to bring it back in 6 weeks. At this time I took it to another shop (had spent 30.000 there in the last yr.

When I got a call from the shop that they had found the failure. It was a bearing retainer bolt on the crankshaft that had backed out and come in contact with the crankshaft folding the keeper in half and shearing the head of the bolt off.

Upon finding this out, I took the broken parts to action and both service techs and the manager all said this should not have happened. Upon calling yamaha customer support they offered me 300.00. It cost 1600 to have it fixed. After this exp I will not support this dealership or yamaha. I file a small claims case 07/28/06 I'll let you know who wins.

to have ALL warranty work performed at a manufacturer-authorized dealer. Not necessarily the selling dealer, but still you can be required to use a manufacturer-authorized dealer for ALL warranty work. It sounds like you used a non-authorized shop, so the manufacturer paid you dealer cost for the parts instead of retail cost for the parts, and no labor costs. Read your warranty to check for any limitations or restrictions. The warranty terms are a contract between you and the manufacturer. If you couldn't wait for the repairs to be performed by a manufacturer-authorized dealer [if so required by your warranty], then it may cost you.
