I was an assistant manager at the Advance Auto Parts in Hohenwald Tennessee. I have numerous years of experiance as a part salesman, and also was a parts pro for Advance in 1997.

The manager of this store is an older gentleman who quite frankly doesn't like to try anything new to create new business or help along the customers which are current.I started back for the company in March of 2003 and worked a few months as just part time help. Then in a few months the assistant manager they had took another job and I was up for the position.

I was greatly appreciative of the promotion and was looking forward to a lasting relationship with this company. I as an assistant manager was required to work 50 hrs a week. Not a problem I didn't care to work 60 hrs a week but the manager did all the scheduling and didn't really keep me up on all the managers duty so about all I was told was how to open and close. I didn't mind the hrs I just wanted to get on a regular schedule instead of in at 7:30 this day then maybe 9:30 the next and every week it was different.

He did make it to where every week or so you would get a 3 day weekend which was ok but I wanted to get regular hrs like the parts pro did which I understand his job was different than mine. I suggested working 6 days a week instead of 5 10 hour days to which the answer was NO. I suggested working the same days every week even if it meant me closing or opening every day NO.I even suggested opening all week and closing all week the next... NO.

Then came the big insult. The company changed our truck day to Monday NIGHT at around 9:00 p.m. I was the one that was gonna be the one to stay late on this day from now on. I told Tom (the manager) that was family night for me and couldnt we do something different. "Well it ain't now" he told me. So I decided to quit.

When I left he didn't want any notice so when I did leave I requested to still work some part time for him being he was already short handed. He said I could always use more part time help. A month went by and I find myself unemployed and nothing to do so I call and ask for a job any job back. I already told the district manager you quit. So he wouldnt even as him if I could work for them again when the old assistant manager was left on the schedule for months after she quit and never worked even if she was scheduled to.

The bad part about the whole thing is I feel I am a good partsman and he was not gonna let me make him look bad or so he thought. You see I live in a very small town where everyone knows everyone. Since I left I have had numerous people tell me that if Tom wasn't there they would shop or even do more business there. He is rude. Doesn't give the right parts and actually acts like he could care less if you shop there or not he gets paid either way. I never done that.

I bet if I had 6 months and one assistant manager (there is 4 assistant managers in training now)I could bring the store numbers up at least 20% that's how poor of a manager he is and believe me everyone in this small town knows it. This is nothing personal against him I just feel there is a better man for the job, not meaning just me but anyone with a little more personality. I know that store can do more because it did better in 1997 when I was there and he wasnt the manager then.

As a resident of Hohenwald, I have to say nothing would surprise me. I don't think that anyone in any position of power in this town has a lick of common sense. Ever read the Tupper Lake saga here? Well, Tupper Lake is the northern version of Hohenwald. It's like reading about Hohenwald. Crooked politicians, people getting away with murder so long as they have the right last name, drug addicts and drunks. Nothing to do here except get drunk, get high, and talk about people and I can't wait to get the heck outta here. I emailed the mayor asking what he plans to do to fix this crappy town. Of course, I got no response. I doubt he knows how to use the internet anyways.

I think the store i work at is poor our manager cussing in front of customers and also in front of employees. I think he ought to have more respect also he is not got our store right we have a new DM and he hasn't even got this store in control these people get by with any thing our manager must have respect for customer's and also for his employees i was knock out of a job because my boss put the blame on me .I don't like the fact he lowered my pay and knocked me out of the job that i was working real hard on but didn't give me the chance. Somebody need's to get this store straigtened out the dm sure can't if even done wrong to someone that work's very hard for his bonus and was knock out of it this is not right. You need to get a dm that know's what he is doing. Because our store is not the way it is suppose to be our inventory specilist is alway's doing our job as a driver and we get sent home and she can't even get her job done right someone needs to go over the dm and look at the store in Hickory that's all i got to say

First of all it's a company policy for management to work 50 hours a week. Those are to be flexible hours with no set schedule. This is a National policy for all stores. If you wanted a set schedule you should have read the job description and policies before accepting the Asst. Manager position. I'm sure the DM would have been happy to explain your new responsibilities if you had any questions. Second, the store Manager has no control over when the Truck day is. That's a corporate decision. Third you left on bad terms with no notice which would normally not put you on the re-hire list.
