AMERICAN EXPRESS ripoff - UNSUBSTANTIATED CHARGES FORCED TO PAY WESTON Florida
Went to purchase home. Mortgage co said credit report showed I owed $9933.84 to Amex. I had closed my accounts back in 2004 and paid them in full. Never heard from Amex from the time I closed accounts, no calls, no statements, no nothing. My credit reports show the accounts I had with Amex closed, but bal shown above. Began calling in June 2005 when I went for mortgage, explained I did not owe this. Told them if I did, send me statements showing where purchases made to amount to this. Was told they would NOT send me any information. Said they would start investigation.
Called two times a week from end of June 2005, still would not give me any info, kept asking me for my account numbers - no longer had cards since they were closed accts and cards destroyed per their instructions. I asked them for the account number, they refused to give it to me. Explained if I owed this money, why would they close acct and never get in touch with me.?? No answer. Kept calling, told investigation would take place. Nothing done as of August 2, 2005.
Explained I would lose $10,000 deposit on hse and be homeless if I could not get this cleared up and had to put closing off already two times. Told at that time an investigation would take place. What happened to the investigation they were supposed to start in June - told none was started!
Down to wire, had to set a closing date on house or lose my deposit, FORCED to pay $9933.84 to Amex and show mortgage company copy of cancelled bank check. Called Amex Aug 8 and was advised they got ck - told them I needed letter faxed to me that check received, was told it would take till August 10 to post. Called August 10 and was told they didn't post check because they couldn't find where they put the money as I probably did not put my credit card number on check. How could I put credit card number on check since they refused to give it to me all the times I called which to date has been over 40 times. The check was sent with two letters I previously wrote to them disputing this amount and demanding some paperwork. All the info was on the letters that they needed.
My money is now in American Express bank account, I have no idea what I paid for and even if the amount owed was mine, I have no letter stating they received the check and it still shows on my credit report. I have also written to all the credit bureaus, consumer affairs and the bbb.
AMerican Express refuses outright to do anything for me.I had to pay this or lose $10,000 and be homeless literally.
I need some legal advice on how to recoup money I KNOW I DID NOT OWE.
