My (other) computer has been blocked by AntiVirus 2008 pop-up demanding payment of ~$30. I cannot use the machine to get online, am being prevented from using my own property by this virus.

If anyone can locate these people/person and wants to take them to court I am willing to join.

SpyBot does not detect it.

I have not paid the money but my machine is useless online currently.

Has anyone located the company or a way of getting their virus off?

Thanks - KD

Get a hold of the free malwarebytes utility from malwarebytes dot org. Download the free version and scan the drive. Takes it off easily. I've had to use it several times for people in the same boat.

It's a nasty one. Search ROR for antivirus 2008 and my name to see some hints and solutions. Disconnect your system from the internet (or any other network) until you get rid of it. If on the internet, this thing is going to open the door, so to speak, and you're going to have a HOST of trojans, back-doors and what not installed on your system. DISCONNECT it from any network-pull the plug! Disconnect the cable to the computer or to your home network router. If you have a wireless router, disconnect the router or pull the power plug. The fast and cheapest method to restore you system is to use the recovery disks and reinstall the operating system. However, you will lose your data (if on your main drive) and have to reinstall other programs and drivers. If this is unacceptable, search in your area for a local PC tech who is highly skilled. The d**n thing (and other crap that gets installed from the internet) CAN be removed without losing your data but it is labor intensive and it won't be cheap. I charge $85 per hour. I've successfully removed this crap and the OTHER crap that qets installed while it's connected to the internet without losing user data or reinstalling the OS but it takes TIME. To manually remove this thing and all the other crap that's going to get installed takes a good level of expertise and a lot of registry files editing-this is not something for the unskilled to attempt. Good luck
