This weekend, I changed cellular service from ATT/Cingular to Verizon. This happened in the middle of my billing cycle. I ported over my mobile number, rendering my ATT/Cingular account dead and useless. (now more than ever)

I swtiched because I used to have Cingular, and could not get a signal in my home in the middle of Silicon Valley. Then I switched to ATT. Most of the time, it worked ok, except when I needed to talk to my dad who was in his car DIRECTLY behind me on Interstate 80 in Sacramento...one would think you could connect in the flat as a pancake area on a 6-lane Federal Interstate...

So as of 2:00 Sunday, my ATT account is dead. I call this morning to find out the remaing amount I owe, as I am ready to pay my latest statement, and I want to pay it all off at once.

Turns out, I get to pay for an ENTIRE MONTH of 'service', 2 weeks of is service I cannot use if I wanted to. No pro-rating. NICE. I told the customer service rep that now I am REALLY glad I dumped ATT. Oh, well, they just lost a customer for life, just like Cingular did years ago. Maybe in 2 years, Verizon will suck just as bad...we'll see.

The truth is, all wireless companies have problems. You will have times when you hate Verizon, even more than you hated AT&T. What I have learned for certain: Verizon is the best subscription provider. Yes, one company has this feature, and Sprint has the earlier weekends........but for customer service, network quality, reliability, etc, Verizon is at the top. (you can the same conclusion from Consumer Reports for the last 3 rankings. T-mobile and AT&T were always last. And Cricket? I would have Cricket service if they were nationwide. Good call quality, few problems, no nonsense charges.....they are the company to watch.

I am a former wireless consultant, meaning that I sold sveral different wireless services and recommended the appropriate service based on a persons individual need. I worked with cingular who was Celular One. Anyway, know this, all of your bills are billed one month ahead. If your bills were paid current you dont owe them anything, they owe you or you have broke even ask to speak to a manager!!!

To pro-rate or not to pro-rate

I used to work for AT&T Wireless, in their call center in Austin TX, two years ago when they were in the middle of the BIG upgrade that didn't run smoothly and why the had to sell to Cingular. So this info is based on what I was taught 2 years ago in AT&T's training class. Because of line portability if you canceled your service in the middle of your billing cycle the month is pro-rated and you run a giant risk of going over your minutes. They calculate out how many minutes are allocated for each day, and if you go over, it could cost a couple hundred dollars. So, you may call yourself thankful(lucky)that you are only paying your monthly service, plus taxes and other extravagant fees. You might want to call about why they didn't pro-rate your bill, but that may not be beneficial for you.

Come on... Did you really think you would only have to pay half of your normal monthly charge?

Did you really think you would only have to pay half of your normal monthly charge? It's like when you have a plan where you get 600 mintues for $39.99. Even if you only use 300 you still have to pay $39.99. Your not going to get a reduction because you only used half. You had the option to use it all but you didn't. You had to know the company wasn't going to absorb the cost of that.
