The scammers called my grandmother and asked her for the info at the bottom of her check. Not sure exactly what ruse was used, but I think they told her that she was owed a payment, pretended to be a bank.

Then they issued themselves two different checks on her account on 11/3/06 and 11-06/06, with two different payees. Each was for close to $400.

I found out because I recently got power of attorney over her account and am investigating fraudulent activity. Poor thing is 89 and can't tell when people are scamming her. She baarely has any money, but the scammers are after her hot and heavy on a daily basis.

One of the payees is "BNKSAFE", the other is "CPS The NCAS". The latter endorsed the back of the check with PayStream USA, the former was deposited by Capital Payment Systems to "Fifth Third Bank".

I called the numbers on the checks and was told to leave a message at the BNKSAFE number. The CPS phone number listed on the check was answered by some mumbling guy with a ghetto accent who was totally rude and obviously a scammer.

My name is Ari Tietolman, I am the president of Paystream USA and director of the BANKSAFE program. I would like to offer resolution to your claim by providing your grandmother with a full refund, and full assistance (free of charge) to get the other transaction reversed or refunded as well. First off, I would like to clarify that I am in no way connected to Capital Payment Systems or the NCAS, however I am familiar with both those organzations. The number you quoted in your report on CPS/theNCAS (800-949-0827)is actually the customer care center for my BANKSAFE program, so I beleive you may be slightly confused about that. To clarify, Capital Payment Systems is merely a processing facility, and the NCAS is a consumer advocacy group with benefits similar to the BANKSAFE program. Either way, your grandmother does not need access to both services, and since you say she is hard on money, I would be happy to provide her with a refund for the BANKSAFE registration fee, while still allowing her access to use our service to get the money back from The NCAS, or any other company that she requires resolution from. All you need to do is call me direct with your coordinates at 1-800-949-4305, and I will see to it that your grandmothers refund be sent out the same day. I will also forward you to our fraud recovery specialist, who will assist you with your claim against CPS the NCAS. We have already had one complaint filed through BANKSAFE about The NCAS, and when we contacted them, they were very cooperative and resolved the matter quickly; they appear to be a legitimate organization as far as our investigative reports show us. It is mere coincidence that your mother registered for both programs in the same week, and it is unfortunate that she is being overwhelmed with telemarketing calls at her age. Now that you have taken power of attorney, we have some other suggestions for you to put an end to the harrasment, and block any future transactions from being debited from her bank accounts.
