Call, fax, email, or write the Commissioner of Banks in your state. BB&T is allowed by law to hold and post items "at their discretion". So, for example, if you have $20.00 in your account, deposit $100.00, and then remove $80.00 all on the same day---BB&T can count your $20.00 you already had, then deduct the $80.00 you removed--causing a balance of negative $60.00, then they charge $35.00 Overdraft which leaves negative $95.00---then they add your deposit of $100.00 -leaving you a grand total of $5.00. It's all legal because they can hold, post, in any order "at their discretion". FIGHT BACK! DEMAND the laws and regulations are changed. Items should be deducted and deposited in the order they are received.

Hi there, Many, many years ago at an independent bank in Manassas, VA my statement showed that the bank actually created my negative balance by taking out the NSF fees BEFORE the debits were posted. This resulted in several hundred dollars in monies owed to the bank and to people I was paying. I took my statement to the bank, calmly sat down with the bank manager (president) explained and showed what happened. He told me that even that long ago the didn't have to post credits before debits. It was "first come first serve" . I was able though, by adding all the debits and all the credits, to prove that without the fees, my account was in good standing. He apologized and put all the $ back in my account. Promptly offered me a letter for each vendor to explain the bank's error and asked them to re-post the check for guaranteed payment. I think this is what we are lacking in Corporate Banks, the personal touch. But we have to work with what we have. Whenever you can, use a small independent bank. I know a lady that mails all her paychecks to a small bank in another State for that reason. If you don't have that option, don't put them on the defensive if you have a problem. Have your homework done and go talk to them as if they were your friend. The people sitting at the stations are not out to harm you, but you cannot accuse them and yell at them if you want to be treated fairly. Simple: credits - debits = ? Remember, the first 3 people you talk to are only automated robots with no authority. Go to the top--------politely. If you are going to get an attorney, don't tell them, that shuts down communication.

Using debit cards there isn't a float time allowing you to spend money that is not in your account then covering it the next day with a deposit. The bank may get the direct deposit on Thursday but it does not become available to draw against until the pay date (the date shown on the paystub). Making a purchase on Thursday against funds available on Friday is overdrawing your account. It's not how the banks posts the transactions you make, it's you spending money not in your account at the time you make the transaction. It's a pretty simple concept.
