I recently bought a used Toyota Prius at Bell Ford in Phoenix, AZ. After taking the car into a toyota dealership to get some service work done, because it was under warranty, i was told that the car had been in an accident, and in their opinion, a pretty good accident. The techinican showed me how he knew it was in an accident. I called Bell Ford back to tell them what happened, and my sales guy from Fleet, Doug Wise, was supposed to find out if my trade vehicle was still there because i told him i wanted it back. He never called me back. A week or so later i took the car back in to get some more service work done. i was waiting on a part to come in so i just took the car back in, yet again, to have that part installed. I liked the vehicle so much that i looked into buying a brand new one. The dealer offered me 14,000 for my vehicle that i just paid 19,600 for BECAUSE it was in an accident. Now at this point 2 independent mechanics have looked at the vehicle and mentioned the accident, not talking to each other. This has seriously devalued my vehicle, now i am upside down beyong belief and i feel a moral obligation to tell any future owner, if i could ever sell it now, that it was in an accident. Carfax did not show an accident, but it had obvioudly been in one. NEVER BUY A USED CAR FROM BELL FORD.

I took the car back to Bell Ford today, a 2 hour commute and showed the mechanics and managers what had happened. They offered to buy it back from me for 17,500. WHAT A JOKE! They should have known, through their 143 point inspection that the A/C wasn't working, and then should have picked up on the clues to the accident. THey are relying on their carfax report and saying their blame stops there. THis is ridiculous. Their MISSION stated all over their lobby is to do what is right for their customer. This is not doing what is right, they should accept responsiblity for not properly inspecting the vehicle and buy it back from me at the price i bought it from them. This just ads to the category of 'used car salesman' and these people are crooks. If i can take legal action, i will.

If your Prius HAS been in a bad wreck, take the $17,500

These cars all have unibody (sheetmetal) construction, and they are never the same after a hard hit because the bodies cannot be reliably straightened... they tend to spring back toward the wrecked shape in time. Recurring electrical problems from pinched wires are one annoying possibility. A/C tubes can be rubbing against improperly repaired sheetmetal causing them to leak. The list goes on. Next time, if you cannot recognize a wrecked car when you examine one, pay someone who is qualified to do an inspection for you before purchase. Or simply buy only new cars. Toyotas depreciate so slowly that buying a used Toyota makes little sense. And someone who buys a new Toyota seldom has a reason to trade it back in for a long time. You may have found a recent vintage Toyota that WAS traded in for a good reason...
