My wife and I went to buy a new car. I usually research carefully, but this time I went blindly. We decided to buy a Mazda Tribute. After getting completely wrong information about features, and prices from the salesperson (it should have been our 1st clue), we decided to make a deal. All they wanted to talk about was payments, I wanted the price.

The finance guy couldn't figure this out! It's amazing that they can figure out payments, but not the actual price! Anyway, we finally get it done, and go to the finance guy, who prints up the contract. My second mistake - assuming that the contract would refect what we agreed upon. Anyway, I had to go home to get our trade-in, and my wife stayed at the dealership.

I was stopped at a light, and happened to glance at the contract, and it was for 52 months, rather than the 48 agreed upon. I immediately called my wife, and told her to tell them to either fix it, or no deal. The finance guy, who now, according to my wife was very rude, proceeded to right it up again, at the right price.

Incidentally, the Tribute was a piece of junk. I had three problems with the transmission - in traffic - within 6 months. I ended up selling it, just to get rid of it.

Also, I received the usual questionaire in the mail, from Mazda, and I filled it out as truthfully as possible - including the wrong information from the salesperson, and the ripoff on the contract. I received a phone call from the sales manager, complaining that I filled it out as such. When I explained to him why I filled it out that way, he basically made two comments - firstly the salesperson didn't work there anymore, and since she was a woman, didn't really know anything anyway, and I should have filled it out with a glowing review, because that will reflect upon him! Obviously, the only thing he cared about was his commission, not that we had problems with them.

PS I have bought about 8 cars, new and used, and there has been only one dealer that I would go back to a 2nd time, and that is Brown and Brown in Mesa (I have bought 3 cars from them).

Car dealers prefer 'payment buyers' rather than 'price buyers'

If they can tack another another $20 on a 'payment buyers' 48 payments, they get what? Another $960. If they tack on 4 extra payments, they get what? Possibly another $960? So you are telling us.... what? That everyone should READ their paperwork BEFORE they sign it? What a novel practice! You sound like some kind of radical, here! The contract 'screwup' was the lienance manager's fault. The salesman (or saleswoman) would almost certainly be irrelevant here. Next time, go cash. Your credit union or bank will love to talk with you. Write ahead to the dealership GM for his quote on what you want, & if you like what you see, when you go in ASK for the GM and do not deal with anyone unless the GM has introduced you to them.

Alan, Don't let Berge get away with this injustice!

I also had the same problems with my vehicle's check engine light. I've filed a report with ripoffreport.com as well. I recently protested outside of their store on president's day weekend. I strongly urge you now to file a report with the arizona attorney general's office. It takes less than 5 minutes. If we can find enough people that were ripped off by Berge they will file a class action lawsuit against the company. Go there now! http://www.azag.gov/consumer/ complaintformintro.html I think we should also plan a protest weekend by all the people who were taken advantage of by Berge!
