Dear Sir or Madam:

Last December of 2002 I purchased a Sony digital camera from the Best Buy in White Marsh, Maryland. It was sold as an out of the box item, so I also bought the extended four-year warranty. I have all my receipts showing such. Best Buy in White Marsh also has record of the purchase, and the four-year warranty. They did not, however, record a serial number, as they should.

When I began having problems with the camera, I immediately brought it back to the store. Specifically, the memory card will not lock into the camera due to a manufacturer malfunction. Best Buy said, No problem, they would take care of it. It was sent to Sony, who refused to fix it because the camera had no serial number. After further research with Sony and countless unhelpful Best Buy professionals, I found that there should have been a sticker on the camera when it was purchased perhaps this explains why the store failed to record it.

Best Buy in White Marsh gave me the camera back, and refused to fix the camera, even with my original receipts in hand. They told me to file a police report to prove the camera was mine, so that Sony could issue a new serial number. The police said they could not do so, and that my receipt was proof enough. Sony refuses to issue a new serial number without a police report.

Whilst these discussions continued, I was never offered any attempt at a compromise, any idea of the cost to fix the camera, and certainly no friendly service. I am now out $475 on a camera I only used one year, and am left with a very bad perception of a store I used to frequent.
