Your response was not germain to what happened to you.  Selecting a moving broker for any reason is a dumb thing to do - let alone doing it for the purpose of a luxury home move.  The fact you only moved locally prior to this also has nothing to do with anything that happened to you.  So let's send a real warning if that is your intent:   

A broker adds no value to the cost of a move, or the process.  Brokers you find on the internet will find you a 1 star mover you never heard of to perform your move.  These movers are generally do bad that the mover could not obtain business on their own because of incompetence.  Therefore, no consumer should EVER select a moving broker for any purpose.  It is an unnecessary cost and only hurts the consumer.  NEVER SELECT A MOVING BROKER TO DO ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP YOU!!

Consumers, whether for a local or long distance move, should select a mover local to them - not one in Florida, unless you happen to live in Florida.  On top of it, Florida is the primary location for every scam mover you can find.  A legitimate consumer should select any agent from one of the following:  United, Allied, Bekins, North American, and a few of the really large movers.  Have the mover send a surveyor to come out and view what needs to be moved and have them provide a quote to you in pounds - not cubic feet.  No surveyor for whatever reason = disqualify from consideration.  Are legit movers more expensive upfront?  Probably yes.  However, moving is not inexpensive.  Scam movers and brokers portray moving as something inexpensive that any consumer can afford, so they offer you a cheap price to perform the move.  And then you end up with a lot of broken, damaged, or lost items.  The question is whether you're going to pay upfront, or on the back end.

If you don't have the necessary funds to afford one of the legit movers, then consider hiring a couple of guys and load a truck you will rent and do the move yourself.  If you select one of these scam movers off the internet because you can't afford the legit mover, I promise you that you will be sorry you ever considered using such a mover. 

These steps I outlined apply to either a local or long distance move.  Never use a broker - period.  Always deal directly with the mover.

I’ve used local movers when I’ve moved locally. This was a cross country move. I’ve moved six times (including one other cross-country move). I’ve never had a problem before. This report is to warn others.

I mean this whole complaint makes no sense.  But this sort of thing can only happen when you select a broker.  Brokers are BAD.

I asked for a company that moved luxury homes. Best Interstate Moving and Storage gave me an estimate for a full pack and said I wouldn’t have to pay for anything I packed myself.  If you were truly interested in moving the contents of a luxury home, then why would you ever (a) search for a broker on the internet, and (b) decide you didn't want to search for a mover local to you who can come to your home and accomodate your schedule.  I mean there is so much stupid on so many levels with this.  The internet is where you find moving brokers who find scam movers who do substandard work.  You have no idea who the broker is going to choose, except that the broker is going to select the least competent mover to perform your job.

What you SHOULD have done is find movers closer to YOU.  Have them come out, see what needs to be moved, and THEN decide on who you trust to move your items on your schedule.  What you did is find someone you never met, and trust them with your prized possessions - without ever evaluating them - and then give up all control of your items and when they would be delivered.  That makes no sense at all.

They screwed me over and gave me a two day window, which did not leave time for a full pack. I spent over $800 on boxes/packing materials and ended up packing everything myself.  That's what happens when you utilize a broker.  The mover shows up on their schedule and forces you to work within their schedule, not yours.  Not smart.  But you selected a broker and that's what you get.

The crappy moving company they found held my belongings hostage for four weeks while I lived without any furniture even though my contract stated "no storage.”  No, your items were not held hostage; the definition of hostage is when the mover decides to hold your items to try and get you to pay more than what's stated in your contract - as if the items were kidnapped.  That didn't happen according to you.  What happened was that the mover didn't have a truck going to where your items needed to be moved.  So they sat on the items until they could get a truck going in that direction.  This generally what happens when you utilize a broker - the broker has contacts with companies that only have maybe 1 or 2 trucks.  So they unloaded your items and placed them in storage until a truck could get going in your direction.  A legitimate mover would have had trucks available to get your items from Point A to Point B with very little time for storage (no storage is unreasonable and no mover can promise it won't happen).

When I finally received my stuff, many items were damaged and dirty.  Yeah, that's usually the result.  Your broker selected the cheap mover and this is what you got.  Not a huge surprise.

Stay off the internet when it comes time to select a mover.  You could have avoided all of this by finding someone local to you.
