where you take the car home and (proudly) show it to friends & family... and then, the dealer calls and oops, so sorry, tells you that there is a financing problem, and your payments are substantially increased, and..... Many people will cave at this point and pony up, because they feel more comfortable acting like rugs. Which is why this trick is used: it works! Some questions: Why don't you get your own financing arranged at your bank or credit union BEFORE you attempt to buy a car *anywhere*? Why don't you research the type of car that interests you before you venture into any dealer's lot? Consumer Reports [April issue] is a great place to start. There are many auto-buyiny web sites, too. Edmonds comes to mind. Then there is NADA. Also "Car Buying Tips & Leasing Scams". The list is quite extensive. Of course, it is less effort for you to simply wander into a dealership and let them 'do everything' for you. Or is that "let them 'do everything' to you"? Well, at least it is easier to let them 'do everything' until you have to pay for that wonderful service, but then, to each their own....
