I went to the CIC web site and requested the free report. They did request a credit card number, but it was plainly stated that this was for informational puposes only, and I would not be charged. Following is the text as diplayed on the web site at the time I requested my report.

Payment Information

Your credit card will not be charged during the free trial period. However, valid credit card information is required to establish your account.

Given the above statement I entered my credit card number. Today I noticed that my credit account had been charged 79.95 by "CIC Credit Monitor SVC 877-513-4175, CA 051503". I called them today and requested that they credit my account. The representive on the phone replied by asking if I wanted to cance my membership. I responded that I hadn't purchased anything from them for 79.95 and that I wanted my money returned immediately to my account. The rep on the phone responded that he had issued a credit. I've not yet seen the refund, but will monitor my account and provide an update.
