Today we received our monthly statement from Sears MasterCard (Citi).  The statement indicated that our last payment was late and that they were charging us a $32.72 late fee.  I logged in to their website https://www.citibank.com/US/cards/srs/indes.jsp and found the same late notice there.

In examining the paper statement, I noted that the due date for the late payment was supposedly 25 September, 2013.  I also discovered that they had received the payment in question on September 10. 2013, fifteen days before the actual due date.

Checking my bank account, I found that my payment check had posted on September 10 2013.

My wife called their customer service and an American woman took the call and then transferred her to some foreigner who had a terrible time with the English language and who made her send in the $57.72  (the minimum payment plus the late fee) supposedly to protect our good credit rating.

I do not understand why, if the evidence of timely payment is shown on the same page as the late fee, what these people are trying to accomplish other than to "extort" money from customers.

I certainly intend to relate my experience with Citi to the 1,200 residents of my community at out next HOA meeting and ask each of them to tell two friends about this scam.

This small debt will be paid off as fast as possible and I shall relate my experience to every human being I can find who is willing to listen.

How stupid do these people think the american people really are?

The key point

The key point of my complaint was the fact that CitiGroup insisted on both their website today and on our latest statement that our payment was over 30 days past due.

Their website today says 38 days late.  Since today's date is October 6th and September has but 30 days, that would put the due date at around August 29.  The website and our statement show that the payment for August was received in a timely fashion, long before the due date.  The due date for the September payment was 09/27/2013, that was only nine days ago.  Sending this misleading report to the credit rating organizations lowers our high credit rating.

We have dealt with this situation in a timely manner and have remitted the amount demanded.

Let's get over this now as it is resolved and closed.

I actually applaud you for coming here and owning up to your mistake, and no if you were infering that I somehow was offended..no.

However, you seem to gloss over your "mistake", and trying to push this off on just not seeing the statement.  Well at least you didn't try to come here and say that Citi intentionally didn't send out your bill as part of this scam.

But remember in your original report you stated without question and with absolute proof of the September payment by looking on their screen and checking with your bank, and that they were trying to pull some sort of "scam" to get a late payment fee.  So now by you saying you never made the payment it sure looks like you outright lied in your original report.

I wonder if you are going to tell the 1,200 members of your HOA that little part as well?

Upon further investigation, it was found that there was no statement received for the month of September.   Receipt of statement triggers payment.  Could be USPS or could be just flat out lost soewhere.  It turns out that no payment was sent for September.  Our apologies to Citi and to all others offended.

Why?

Geees...why does everything have to be a "scam".  What would be the purpose of this "scam" to cheat a single person out of a late fee?   Oh so you say that they do this to everyone?  Well okay you say well what if they just randomly pick on 100,000 people.  Okay..even at 100,000 people at a $35 late fee(yes more than you paid), that is 3.5 Million. Well in a company that makes a few billion that would be as logical as you walking down the side of a freeway and going into the lanes of traffic to pick up a penny.   Not only that have you heard hundreds of thousands of people complaining about this?  Not only that just how are they hiding the money from the actual payments, after all in your case it isn't like it was lost.  You say that you have the cancelled check.

So while this may be tough for you, let's look at what is going on and see if we can look at it logically.  I am going to focus on one statement you made

I do not understand why, if the evidence of timely payment is shown on the same page as the late fee,

You apparently did not post the page you are talkiing about.  As the only page you posted showed that the last payment was received on 8/10 and not 9/10.   So perhaps what would be more telling(and helpful) is for you to go through and look at your current statement(the one that is due 10/25) and the previous 3-4 statements to a time when you know you were current.

It could be as simple as you truly did make a mistake and caught it before it really effected your credit.  Perhaps they did not post your 9/10 payment(even though you say that they showed that they did), and they did make a mistake.
