I was deeply saddened reading the report from Lisa about the conditions at this breeder's location. Though it did not surprise me. My husband and I purchased a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from Evelyn Frei at Coalminer's Kennel in 2006. We were so excited to have a new "addition" to our family. We had named our dog Einstein and could not wait until he arrived. From the moment we picked him up from the airport we knew something was wrong with the breeder. He arrived with no padding or covering on the bottom of the carrier, just a tiny piece of newspaper. It looked like someone had thrown in a tiny bit of food. The carrier was not the right size. Honestly, how much does it cost to purchase absorbent material and some food and water that is properly attached? We spent over $1500 for the puppy and almost $300 to have him sent via the airline (of which I am sure she took a huge cut of).

Einstein arrived with fleas and several infections that cost us over $200 to have fixed. Not to mention how miserable the little guy was. Who knows how long he had the infection and fleas for? Worst of all a few weeks later we realized the puppy was deaf (we thought he was just really stubborn). Our hearts broke, we loved him, but having a deaf dog was not what we had purchased. I was sad but also angry that this woman would knowingly send someone a deaf dog without letting us know and giving us the opportunity to decide. I was also angry with the veterinarian she "claimed" signed off on a healthy puppy. The puppy was deaf, had several infections and fleas and a veterinarian said he was fine. That vet should have their license revoked.

Upon contacting Evelyn, I was told that she had no idea that the puppy was deaf. Even though we had already learned from several dog owners and our veterinarian that white dogs are often deaf or blind. A qualified breeder would know this. I told her that I wanted some compensation for the puppy and was willing to take legal action. Her response was to send the puppy back and she would put him down and send us a new one. I was floored that someone could be so cruel. She knew we had grown attached to the puppy and would never send him back knowing he would be put down. I tried calling her and emailing her, no response. Finally I did let it go. It was making me miserable trying to pursue a legal resolution. It sickened me to know that she was probably doing this to other people as well.

If you are looking for a Staffie, please do not purchase from this woman. It keeps her in business and she thinks it is ok to treat animals and people horribly.
