I opened an account with Compass rather than with my usually bank because of the free ATM fees and free checking. Little did I know that Compass from the get-go planned on making their money off the unsuspecting consumer in a much more devious way.

I was actually overdraft by about $9, despite what it looks like on this statement. Compass, to their satisfaction, managed to daily raise that amount to $191.

05/19/2005 OD CHARGE $6.00

05/18/2005 DEPOSIT $100.00

05/18/2005 OD CHARGE $6.00

05/17/2005 OD CHARGE 6.00

05/16/2005 OD CHARGE $18.00

05/13/2005 OD CHARGE $6.00

05/13/2005 NSF CHARGE $35.00

05/12/2005 WENDY'S $10.41

05/12/2005 NSF CHARGE $35.00

05/12/2005 NSF CHARGE $35.00

05/11/2005 HEB GROCERY $13.14

05/11/2005 NSF CHARGE $35.00

05/11/2005 FRY'S ELECTRONICS $58.68

05/10/2005 WHATABURGER $23.32

As you can see, it looks like I was overdraft many times over. In fact it was the final Wendy's charge that pushed me over by $9. In return for that Compass (the central office in some other state) have penalised me with charges of $191. I called as soon as I got the postcard on 18th May (notice they don't make a phone call so that you can deposit funds immediately to cover it). They said they could reimburse nothing as it was not the bank's mistake. Would I like a supervisor to call back? Yes.

On Thursday 19th the call was to say that nothing would be done about the charges but if we deposited at least half the amount the fees would stop. As yo ucan see, they did not stop the overdraft charges then.

On Friday another supervisor called to say they would be kind enough to cancel $35(still hasn't happened).I said I may as well close the account and go to Wells Fargo, who have always treated me well, to which they retorted, then why should we cancel any of your charges. They have this very skewed policy that they don't have to treat any new customer well until the consumer has been a member for over 6 months.

As a previous member says, Compass don't time the deposits and charges in the sane way other banks do. They fix it so that you appear overdraft before you are. In my opinion, I was only overdraft once, which should be charged the $6 OD fee and the $35 NSF fee, and I should have had a courtesy call to warn me that I was OD. I would have immediately been able to deposit enough to cover that. Now I am $191 out of personal funds and should only be out by $41.

Compass need to change their policies in major ways if they want happy customers who can trust them. I would fax this to their offices now but they conveniently have not added their fax number to my account page.

so you don't keep track of your account and you over draft, basically borrowing money from the bank(yes renting is more expencive than owening). then you get a fee which is not at all unusuall for a any bank. fee comes in and you still havent looked at your account, but you keep spending thinking your ok, but your not. be an adult and keep track of your own money don't expect any bank to baby sit your a*s. you got charged lagitimate fees deal with it. you screwed up not the bank. i wish people would learn to ask questions and learn more but lots of people don't you just stumbel along and when some thing comes back and bites you you look for the "SCAM" to blame it on. p.s. i've banked with compass for 3 years never one fee because i read the disclosure and i check my ballance daily and i *GASP* keep tract of what i spend.

I also had trouble with Compass

#3Consumer Suggestion

Sun, May 22, 2005

In the past I also had trouble with Compass. The trick here is that I had an unexplained 50 buck charge against my account, (Did not trigger overdraft charges) when queried they couldn't explain the charge, had no idea where the money had gone, and had no way to trace who got it (No merchant number or check #, Very strange) but were very adamant that "I" must have been at fault. So I paid it. I then had a second 50 vanish a week later, I "Discovered this when depositing my next paycheck, which promptly vanished, the teller wouldn't give me any explanation except it had all gone to cover "Overdrafts? Then a week later, while trying to figure out where I had screwed up, another completely unexplained 50 buck charge hit the now overdrawn, and supposedly frozen account. Again they had no way to trace this charge, no way to trace it, I began to smell a rat. That was enough, it was plain someone was stealing my money in 50 buck hunks, and so I stopped any attempts from the bank to "Recover" the money. It became plain that someone inside the bank was stealing, since I had not written any checks, not used the Check cashing card or any other activity for weeks, yet this 50 bucks kept showing up. Mind you now, the card was unusable, the account was frozen and still these 50 buck charges kept popping up from nowhere, completely untracable (Supposedly) I talked to a manager and showed him that somebody was stealing from within the bank (Remember, all "Untracable"?) He informed me that in order to close the account I would first have to completely pay all charges then they could close it, and while talking to him another 50 buck charge appeared. That was too much, I told him that there was clear evidence I was not making the charges, he insisted that I had to pay all the charges anyway as it was "My" account, I told him to get f**ked and left. I ceased depositing any money in the account at all, contacted the people who I had written checks to, (Fortunately only 2 ) and told them that I had unauthorized activity in my account, and had had to close it, paid my checks with cash, got my returned checks back and waited until Compass figured that I wasn't sucker enough to play their game of "Gimmie all your (My) money" Then I opened an account at another bank (No problems at all with them) I will never use Compass again, I recomend that nobody else ever use them and I will not respond to any mail from compass. Later My wife happened to speak to one of her coworkers who said she also got a strange 50 buck charge on her Compass account, and another she knew of has had the same thing happen, that's three people all hit the same way. So I figure this, someone within the bank was hitting accounts at random for 50 bucks each, since none of these folks had names anywhere near mine. No one else BUT A BANK EMPLOYEE could have the knowledge to make the 50 bucks "Untracable" They got me for $100. before I figured it out, and probably have a couple of hundred in "Overdraft" charges they haven't a ghost of a chance of ever collecting, but I know I never made those charges. (No "Joint" account) Update, I've been getting flyers addressed correctly to my name and address begging me ot "Come Back To Compass" so I figure they know the charges are bogus, I wrote them back stating I would be glad to open an account with them again the second they refunded my $100. fraudulently taken out of my last account with them, so far no response. I'm not holding my breath. A bit of advice, when opening my next account, I discovered that you can request the new banks checks be numbered anything you want, no more starter checks numbered 100, I started the numbers where the Compas checks left off, about 4300, and continue to do this whenever I change cities and banks accordingly (Have a very nice Credit Union account now), the numbers are now around 6800, and it avoids a great deal of hassle when starting a new account in a new city.
