Just an update for anyone who was in the same position as my wife and I were. After numerous phone calls to CountryWide and registered letters to CountryWide, I am glad to report that my wife and I did receive our money back. CountryWide cried that this is an appraisal fee, but I don't recall seeing an appraiser come to my house. Meanwhile my wife and I were successfull in getting our home equity loan to fix our roof and get a new furnace. I have one mortgage with countrywide and as soon as I can, it will get refinanced! I now see,(Benjamin) that Countrywide is now charging you for making payments over the internet (when does it stop!!??). You get your money securely, and on time and charge your customers for it. Only one word comes to mind when I hear or see a CountryWide ad and that is ROBBERY!! I stand by my previous comments, CountryWide is not worth doing business with, avoid at all cost.

The $300 good faith deposit you are talking about is not a good faith deposit at all. It is the cost of an appraisal, which isnt put in place by Countrywide, but by our appraisal company Landsafe. It is the cost to have someone come out and appraise your property. Any company you would contact to have come out and do an official appraisal is going to charge you for their service.
