This is a karate studio that gets new students in with a referral program where they give students incentive by bringing their friends to class with no charge. Then they get the parents to sign the child up. They get you to sign a contract, not telling you that if you have a financial hardship and cannot send your child to the school anymore because the mortgage payments have to come first, they will sue you. I am living proof. When I got the copy of the contract and learned it was legally binding and called to make payment arrangement, the studio refused and said that they would rather take me to court and have the judge decide on payments. Not exactly what you would have in mind when you sign your child up for an extra cirricular activity. As a single parent, I am completely disgusted with this company and think parents need to be aware of the consequences of a financial hardship. When I was first served with a summons I was in shock and the franchise owner called me back and pretty much told me I needed to pay my bill and he would see me in court.

I was just made aware of this report by one of our current students - more than 6 months after it was filed. Each of our stores are individually owned and operated and there is now a new owner at this location. We typically do not force students to pay for classes they have not taken and are very workable when a family falls into a financial hardship. I can only guess in this case that there was a lack of communication or poor communication between the owner and the parent and the owner felt they needed the help from a (mediator)to get paid for classes they had taught to the student. It is our mission to make Martial Arts a positive experience for students and their families and have a GREAT impact on their lives. I apologize that we were not able to do that for your family.
