I had Canceled my Discover about a year ago. It had nothing to do with me being unhappy with the card. I was just getting rid of credit card in order to buy a home and i was not using my Discover. I called to cancel and it too about 20 mins i had been a hard holder since 1998 and they offered me all sorts of deals and all i kept saying was i want it canceled. Finally after being transferred around a hundred times they told me the card was canceled.

A couple of months later i recived a new Card in the mail. Extemley mad i called again and explained to them i canceled the card i don't want any mail from them or any cards. They told me it was sent out in error and to disregarud the card. everything was fine till this past week. I was sent a card again. This time a Discover Plantnium card.

I called again explaining a year ago i cancelled this card i want no mail and no more cards from this company. They transferred me to another dept where again i had to argue with this guy Ryan that i did not want the card at all no promotions nothing. He says my card was never cancelled a year ago. Supositly its cancelled now. I don't think this is right. If you cancel a card you should not keep getting them in the mail.

I think It should be illegal and i never want it to happen again. I don't even live at the address that they are sending the card anymore and i am married now so the card is not even in the right name. i think that this is dangerous and someone could get a hold of this card and rip me off since i don't expect to be getting thease in the mail since I cancelled the card 3 times now!!!!

That's a very clever and sarcastic response. (The Hell, Michigan thing.) However, anyone that follows that dim-witted advice should know this: 1. If you are having problems closing the account, send a registered letter, return receipt requested. You can then prove your request. 2. If anyone on this board is dumb enough to actually submit the address and phone Dina gives, they deserve what they get if the account is then used fraudulently. May they end up in an identity theft nightmare that takes the rest of their lives to resolve. General delivery addresses are never a good idea. That's like inviting the neighborhood into your mailbox. Or like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Touche, Clarence! Well said! Or, call them up and say it was stolen. And while you've got 'em on the phone, tell them you have a new address: General Delivery, Hell, MI 48169.

just tell them that you are unable to take care of yourself and your power of attorney is handling your affairs and they will cancel you in a heartbeat like they did my 84 yr old mother

Closure of Cards,,, solicitation calls to reopen a card

I would have to agree with you here. Anyone who tries to close a credit card must prepare themselves for a runaround. Why? RETENTION EMPLOYEES WORK ON HOURLY PLUS COMMISSION. They will try anything to avoid closing an account, including telling you they are closing it but not really doing so. How can I say this as an employee? I worked in Loss Prevention at Discover until recently. I now work in another department. In my experience in LP (LOSS PREVENTION) Ihave seen the effects you mention: fraud as the result of our company's employees not doing the job they are supposed to because they do not want to lose out on the big $$ bonus checks. Some things to keep in mind: 1. If you ask to close your account, you might be "qualified for retention" or you might not be. If you aren't it is because you have been late or overlimit, bounced checks, or have generally proven yourself to be a credit risk. Bad credit is actually in your favor when it comes to closing an account! If you qualify for retention..... 2. if you speak to a rep, ask for their first and last name. If they refuse to give their whole name, ask for a supervisor. We are monitored regularly and if we refuse our full name we get "dinged". I don't peronally agree to this policy (for reasons of privacy I won't go into here) but there it is. 3. if an employee closes your account you should automatically receive a confirmation letter w/in 2 weeks. If you don't, suspect a problem and call back or write. 4. by law, only items in writing are considered legally valid/binding. Integrity says that anything we do or say on the phone should be valid and upholdable (again, we are monitored for compliance) but if you don't have a paper to take to court (or a taped recording of your own) it becomes "HE SAID/SHE SAID" 5. Even accounts that we DO close can be subject to "REOPENING" This means if a year later you find a card in a drawer and use it, forgetting it is closed (or someone else finds it...at an old address, etc) the account can automatically reopen. I don't agree w/ this policy. To combat it, request to be added to NON SOLICITATION LIST and ask the representative if they can deny the auto reopen ... THIS IS NOT A FEATURE OF ALL ACCOUNTS...and I have an admittedly fuzzy idea of how it works, so you will have to trust the retention rep that closes your account on this one. 6. you can also get solicitation calls to reopen a card. again, ask to be placed on non solicitation list. 7. Update your address if you know you are moving when you close the account. A lot of people don't do this because they DON'T want sales calls or mail, but you must weigh this against the possibility that if your account is not closed as you request (due to a dishonest employee or what have you) the next person to live at your old address might help themselves. it happens every day.
