Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I worked as a mid-level supervisor at the Eastland Park Hotel very briefly back in 2006. If I knew then what I know now I would have made this post a lot sooner and perhaps even called a lawyer (which is exactly what I should have done, you'll find out why shortly...)

The hotel industry is not an easy one to work in, there is always something that needs immediate attention or someone who needs help with a problem. Let me start by saying that the 'historic' building in which this hotel is operated is so run down it's practically dissolving from the inside out. I've never seen mold grow over rust until I worked here. Rats, roaches, ants, you name it they've got it. Whenever the chain-smoking throwbacks in Engineering DO get around to fixing something they see no problem with leaving a huge mess, tools included, in the rooms as if it were their own garage. This place is so disgusting I'd rather spend a night in Silent Hill than stay here.

One day after a casual smoke-break conversation someone asked me if I believed in Jesus. I answered as politely as I could to such a sensitive question, "Not that it's any of your business, but no. In fact, I'm Wiccan." A few days later I started noticing Jesus Loves You pamphlets had been stuffed into my locker, which I discreetly tore up and put in the trash: Despite this incident I have no animosity toward Christians, but freedom of religion also means freedom FROM religion.

After about a week of this I candidly approached my supervisor, 'Joyce.' I told her that if I wanted a sermon I'd go to a church, that whoever is doing this I'd kindly appreciate it if they would stop because while 'preaching the good news' is a core tenement of Christianity this is totally improper for the workplace.

The next day she fired me.

I was never late, I never left early, I always did exactly as I was told when I was told to do it and if offered I always did other tasks. Up until that religion-conversation I was constantly praised and told how glad they were to have me aboard, and then they apparently fired me for not believing in Jesus. I was told something to the effect of "People like you don't do well here, anyway."

At the time I didn't thing suing would have been worth it: The pay wasn't all that great, the work environment was lousy and hostile (and in another managers' case downright abusive) and who wants to work in a building that could one day fall down on top of you?

It only recently came to my attention that some 3 months later two other fellow Wiccans, one of which was a friend of mine, were fired after similar events.

All through my time there I don't recall meeting any Jews, Homosexuals or Black People (aside from the Sudanese and Somalian housekeepers) That alone should have been a red flag.

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Fri, August 22, 2008

I am a former employee who didn't get fired but resigned after about 3 months due to just the overall nastiness i felt the place was. This was in 2007 Yes, i can believe ANYTHING negative that is written about this horrid place. I feel badly for the wican woman who was treated badly, and here are some more thoughts about this "place".... "Joyce the supervisor", i was told had quit and was trying to draw some sort of disability check. This happened after i left. Bankruptcy i am not aware of. The hotel is held by a "private investment group", and is operated by Magna Hospitality. I wouldn't be suprised if they were trying to liquidate the place from thier banner, as it is just as bad a dump as the woman in the previous post said. "Front office manager", in my opinion, is a huge joke and i was in awe each day when i'd come to work and see her STILL there. To young and very inexperienced. She'd have a hissy fit when things didn't go just her way and would have them in front of guests and other employees alike. Regardless of what department you worked in you could be witness to one of these at any time. She was also, i my opinion, very "scatter brained". I recall bieng there one day when an employee called in who had to have a sudden surgeory at the local hospital and her saying to the employee on the phone "Well.......you COULD have given me a BIT more notice, don't you think?" The person DID really have a minor procedure and brought in the proper documentation the next week to proove it. Within the short time i was there i watched at LEAST a total of 8 people who were under the front desk department (this also included the Bellman and overnight security/audit people) leave JUST because of HER. The FUNNIEST part often times being when people would submit thier resignations and she would say "Oh............well a TWO week notice simply ISN'T enough. A two week notice is very 80's I prefer a month notice." No one ever gave her a month and i saw more then one employee cut thier notice short by either calling out or not showing up at all. "Assistant office mananger" was in my opinion cut from the same cloth. Had it not been for the office manager this tart would not have HER position. Moody as the day was long, but most generally on a BAD mood side. I watched her bring new employees in training to tears more then once. This one also had NO problem having a fit TO or in front of a guest who was checking in or out. The building itself was and i suspect IS a total state of disrepair, from what i could see. Money is sacred and none is ever spent on much of anything until it MUST be. The "apartments" treat the room guests to the dregs of society walking through the place at all hour of the day and night. Police are there often for drug busts, and it wasn't uncomon when i was there in the winter time to see homeless people asleep in the lobby and bathroom areas. Engeniering guys were great though, i have to say. Chief Engineer "Don" was well respected by other department heads and liked well by his employees. That staff i found to be hard working. General Manager "Peter" was a sweet heart of a man, but sadly i DON'T think he was aware of the way certian things were within the place. I'm told he's no longer there and am unsure who replaced him. In my opinion, if you want to work in a hotel try one of the ones down on the Portland Waterfront. In my opinion, staying here or working at this place isn't worth the time, effort, or heart ache involved.

Some time after I filed this rip-off report about the Eastland Park Hotel in Portland, Maine, I met up with a nice lady who worked at a nearby South Portland hotel years ago. Apparently 'Joyce' used to be their housekeeping manager also and that after a short time did not leave of her own accord like she had told me when I worked with her at the EPH. I'm under the impression from her account that she has no idea how to handle money and is in fact religiously prejudiced. And I recently heard a rumor that the clueless bigots at the Eastland may be filing for bankruptcy because they can no longer afford the upkeep (more appropriately lack thereof) of that ramshackle building they call a hotel. I have no official confirmation on this, however the fact that the rooms were so disgusting that they had quite a time convincing people to stay the duration of their reservations, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
