Empire Fitness Unfilled promises, stolen money, broken contracts, and terrible management... 9 months of H*ll Hoboken New Jersey
Even though I had paid my bills on time, Empire Fitness overcharged my credit card with late fees for three months in a row. When I tried to rectify this situation, management refused to see me or call me back. Finally, after three months of attempting to get my money back, a manager promised me a free month of membership. I was then billed for that "free" month of membership.
After about 3 months of calling to speak to a manager every day (sometimes 2- 3 times a day), no one called me back to help me figure out my situation. The manager was never "in the office" and even when I went to Empire Fitness (5-6 times), the manager was never there.
Finally, in early December, I was able to cancel my gym membership. The manager I spoke to seemed very friendly and understanding of my situation and was nice enough to cancel it for me.
Six months later in early July 2008, I received a bill in the mail for nearly $300. The bill said that I had not paid my membership dues in over six months, and that I was to pay the money immediately or else the gym would be taking action against me (perhaps to even ruin my credit score!). Since I had not stepped foot in Empire Fitness to use their facilities since November 2007 and had cancelled my membership in December 2007, I needed to speak to a manager again to figure out my situation.
Again, the manager was never in the office, and nobody returned my calls for nearly two weeks. Again, I went to Empire Fitness and spoke with a manager who went out to run his personal errands while I was sitting in the gym waiting to speak with him. I waited for over half an hour before he returned. Though he seemed very nice and assured me that he would get back to me by the end of the week (almost 2 weeks ago!), he never did. I have called 1-2 times per day for the entire month of July 2008.
This gym is a scam, and a complete pain in the a*s. They will steal your money, make false promises, and disregard cancelled memberships. Management is the worst I have ever seen in my life. DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM!!!!!!!!!!
