In February First consumers decided to cancel my credit card due to no fault on my part, probably because they were going bankrupt. I had hardly used the card at all, and at the time it was current. I believe there may have been a balance of about $100 on it. I only agreed to get the card to help rebuild my credit after I divorced. Once the card was canceled I proceeded to make the minimum payments on the account to clear the balance on the card.

Sometime in March or April, FCNB turned my account over to collections, because I guess they wanted payment in full. I proceeded to send the collection agency a minimum of $50 a month to clear the account. The first week in May I made a $50 dollar payment, I received a call the following week and the agent said that I had a balance of $16 and some change to finish paying off the account. Meanwhile, I had received a statement from FCNB which did not show all the payments I had made on the account.

When I tried to call the agent back after realizing this, I was told they no longer collected for FCNB and was given an 800 number to "nowhere". I subsequently sent a letter & check for the $16 + balance asking them to please correct the decscrepancy on my account. I have heard nothing from them in regards to this and have no other way of making contact with them except through the statement address, which obviously is fruitless. In the mean time, FCNB continues to send me statements each month and continues to add charges onto my closed and paid in full account.

Very concerned about how FCNB is handling my closed account.

I had an account with Newport News, well sometime during March & April of 2003 my account was closed due to FCNB going out of business. Well I had moved in December 2002 I e-mailed and called Newport News/Spiegel of this matter so that I would receive my monthly statements to the correct address. When February roled around I had noticed that I hadn't received a statement so I gave Newport News a call, they told they had not received a change of address at all and was sending everything to my old address. I had informed them that I did the change of address on-line at through their websit, and know once asgain while I was one the phone with the representative. At that time no one informed me that they might be going out of business. I only had a $75 and some change balance. Well finally sometime in June I got a letter stated that FCNB had gone out of business and received anything since then. I made a few calls and got an out of state number 516-576-8706. When I called the number their was no one to speak with, eveyrthing had to written and mailed to Credit Card Processing Center, P.O.BOX 9204, Old Beth's Page, New York, 11804. Of course I wrote at least 3 letters and still no response. All of a sudden a collection agency calles me in December claiming that I owe $370.00 in charges and late fees. I informed the agent that I only had a $75 and some change balance and was willing to settle the account right then and there, the agent told me that she was putting it down as refusal to pay and putting it on my credit report. Everyone that is going through this with FCNB needs to get together and do something about it. They are ripping us as consumer's off.
