We just learned that Five Brothers Pizza took over Mama Sbarros at the location on Route 25A.

My son placed an order earlier this afternoon asking for a meat Sicilian pie and large tossed salad. To their credit: the pie was delivered within the time specified. Attached to the order was a Five Brothers menu -- we thought we had been dealing with Mama Sbarros.

Upon opening the pizza box, we saw a smaller-sized pizza than we had received in the past. My husband phoned Five Brothers and asked why the pie was smaller. The manager told him, "We have new, bigger boxes."

I opened the menu and it reads: 16" x 16" Sicillian pie. I took out my measuring tape and the Sicillian in the box measured 14" x 14.5". I measured the box which was 18" x 18". A standard Neapolitan measures 18". How can the box this pizza was in be 'new and bigger' if they used 18" boxes all along?

Next I called the manager back and explained to him that we just received the delivery, that the pizza is 14" x 14.5". He tells me that isn't true, that his pans measure 16x16 and that they use the pans. I told him that I am here with the tape measure and I am looking at a pie that is 14x14.5". He insinuated that I was lying and did not offer to make good in any way. He could have offered a new 16x16 pie, a small credit toward the next order or even apologized. I wasn't looking for money, I was looking for what I paid for -- a 16" x 16" meat Sicillian pie as stated on the menu which came with the order.

Onto the bill: When my son placed the order (I was within earshot) at no point was he told that he would be charged $2.50 per topping on the meat pie. I was charged $7.50 for the 3 toppings which usually compose the 16" x 16" 'meat' pie. The total for this smaller 14" x 14.5" pie was $21.45! Reading the new menu, I noticed that I could have ordered a Sicillian '5 Brothers Special Pizza' with SIX (6) toppings for $20.95! At no point was this brought to my son's attention.

The tossed salad was $6.95 -- a $1.45 more than Mama Sbarros had charged.

Also, my son asked for delivery and was never informed that there was a $2.00 delivery charge!

Arrivederci Five Brothers!

Haven't been back since they ripped me off. - rather interesting that this thread has been quiet for 34 days and suddenly two people from two different locales post about how much they like this pizza.

John, It would appear that you are the exception, rather than the rule. I've had other people talk with me and they, too, have had poor experiences with the management as well as been generally unhappy with the product. I've since been using a spot in St James and they have incredible pizza -- the best pizza around -- I wish I had gone to them sooner! **************** Tamitha, Enjoy Hermantown, MN. -- good luck in your new hometown. You couldn't have gone to this pizzeria too often prior to your move, as ownership only recently changed. If you went to one in a different town, please say so/list location as my complaint is solely with the E. Setauket location -- I am not familiar with their other shop. As for your snide remarks: learn how to spell and differentiate your from you're, utilize capitals and punctuation. If you wish to be taken seriously, follow the above directions. If your preference is to sound like a bored teen at home in front of the computer, you've done a fine job. ****************** I find it rather interesting that this thread has been quiet for 34 days and suddenly two people from two different locales post about how much they like this pizza. One is from the same town as the pizzeria and posted at a reasonable hour, but the other posted at 336AM and judging by her writing skills (or lack thereof)sounds as though she was a bored teenager with nothing better to do.

Even the pizza guy rips us off. Any mathematicians figure out how much these guys will profit by sellin 14" pizzas as 16" pizzas, and then compare it to the customers he'll lose?

Hey Ken, Do you have any grocery stores called Albertson's? I spend a couple of months in the summer at my other home in Colorado Springs, Co, and I found this fantastic NY pizza they carry. It is a frozen pizza, Called Eddies. It is flash frozen and shipped from Brooklyn. The box is blue, and has an enormous picture of the pizza outside, and it is the actual size in the box. I am telling ya, I live off of it when I am in Colorado. You defrost it, then cook it at 500 degrees in the oven. Tastes just like the pizza guy took it out of the oven, fresh and hot. It folds!! It also comes in a resealable package in the inside of the box, and it's pre-sliced. So you can have it all at once, or save for later. It is 2 pounds of delicious pizza. I hope this helps, and you can get some.

Believe me, nobody that knows how good real NY pizza is, would ever dream of ordering from a schlop shop like Pizza Hut. You fold NY pizza, you cannot fold Pizza Hut cardboard. I appreciate Patti coming on here, and letting people know the deal with the pizza place.

To Cory in TX Mama Sbarros was charging prices which were right in line with many of the other local pizzerias in the area. (There are 5 within a 1-1/2 mile stretch of 25A.) They weren't priced too low; their prices on some items were a little higher, but you were getting a very good product. I was not made aware of the change in company until AFTER the pizza was delivered. Had I known prior to it, had the company answered the phone "5 Brothers" we would have known to ask for the new pricing. I didn't receive the menu until AFTER the pizza was delivered. I didn't know the new prices until AFTER the delivery. Please understand that the new ownership did NOT make clear they were there, did NOT make clear any changes in price and did NOT make clear a delivery charge. Mama Sbarros did not and other pizzerias in the area do not charge for delivery. After the fact I read their menu and it offers a 16x16 sq pizza which is equal to 256 sq inches. The pizza I received was 14x14.5 equal to 203 sq inches. I was charged for 53 sq inches of pizza and toppings which I did not receive. That's full freight on 20% less pizza. If you were charged for a full tank of gas but drove off with your tank 4/5 full, wouldn't you be unhappy? I appreciate your watch battery analogy; I am in business for myself and know that not only do you have to price competitively, but you have to price to stay in business. I also know better than to insinuate the customer is lying. You're right -- a smart manager would have offered a small credit or even an apology. But I received nothing save for an insult. That said, Five Brothers lost a family who ordered 3x per month and a business which ordered 2x per month.

That's why mama sbarros is no longer in business. For what the were charging, they couldn't afford to keep the doors open. But, a certain number of old customers will pay the new prices, a certain number won't. You never asked and they didn't tell. You have the new menu with the new prices. You can always order from domino's or pizzia hut. Had a guy come into my shop with a cartier watch. He asks me how much for a battery. I tell him $20. He says XXXXX use to charge me $11. I say take it back to XXXXX. He says XXXXX is no longer in business. I say that's because he was charging $11 to put a battery in your watch. A smart manager might have made a price adjustment.

Wow, thanks for the tip!! $2.50 for a topping is crazy talk. I think it was really smart you measured that pizza with a tape measure. New, bigger boxes, nice try on their part. I appreciate the tip. We have had food from Mama's before, and now to know it's Five Brothers, I will go back to making my own, or going to Lombardi's.
