On July 2, 2004 I went into my local Fry's Food & Drug to some quick shopping. I only needed to get a few items so I did not need a shopping cart or hand basket.

As I was exiting the deli/bakery into the produce on my way to the checkout one of the employees positioned as a greeter (a.k.a shoplifter stopper) started to yell at me from across the produce department asking if I needed a basket. I ignored them and they became very insistent that I take a basket.

Keep in mind they were at the main entrance on the other side of the produce department which is a good 30 to 40 feet distance in length. I was nowhere near the entrance or the employee. As the employee kept insisting and yelling for me to take a shopping basket she started to wave the basket in the air. All the customers turned towards me and eyed me as a shoplifter. I immediately checked out and told the cashier about the incident and told him to keep the V.I.P. club card as I was never going to return.

The "greeter" in this ordeal eyed me out of a dozen customers simply because I was holding two canned items without a shopping cart or basket on my way to the checkout.

First rule of retail, NEVER treat a customer as criminal which is how I was treated.

Apparently this store only wants customers who buy enough items to fill a shopping cart. All others are eyed and treated as criminals.

I immediately contacted their corporate offices and told them of the incident and how I was treated. I have yet to here back.

I work at a Fry's, albeit not the one you're complaining about. I won't claim that it's a great company; I'm job-hunting in another internet window as I type this. Management is awful, customers treat us terribly, and for the part-time worker in a world where jobs are hard to come by, it's either grin and bear it, or be unemployed. However, I would like to point out that Fry's takes great pride (as it should) in hiring a large amount of older people and mentally handicapped people to do jobs such as bagging or greeting. This is a wonderful thing; letting people that some companies refuse to look twice at a chance at a job where they can be productive. You more than likely just insulted a mentally-handicapped person. I hope you feel better about yourself.

Have you noticed...

Have you noticed that they seem to employ the elderly or perhaps those that are mentally or physically handicapped as their greeters? Perhaps you truly did misunderstand the motivation behind their insistence.

This is not a ripoff and it makes no sense. Frankly I would've been interested in knowing why they wanted me to have a basket so badly. Also if there were 12 customers all around you how do you know they were indicating you? And why did you hurry out of the store? Sounds as if there's more to this story that your'e not telling us.

Watch Out At Fry's

If any one of you could see what goes on behind the scenes at these stores, you'd think twice about buying anything from them. I deliver to them nearly every day, trust me, it isn't pretty. The FDA or Health Dept. would have a heyday with them......

Okay so I see you have a report on Fry's but have you checked all the Fry's around in Arizona? I've worked for Fry's for 2 years and still treat my customers right which is the only reason I got the job anyway. If this person was that rude to you it was either their last day or they just didn't care or even just was pissed. Sorry but every job if it's your last day your gonna act out, if you just don't care maybe you want to get fired and if your pissed of course your gonna act out.....trust me Fry's is one of the only stores with nice people. Lets compare... 1. Walmart - Prices are good sometimes - you DON'T get the product you want plus a little more - their people are not great! they are rude always every store - the shopping experience there makes me want to NEVER shop there. out of a 100% I'd give them a 30% 2. Safeway - Prices always SUCK - you always get the product....because no one wants to buy it and it most likely has dust on it - their people are great - but the prices are rediculous makes a bad shopping experience. 60% 3. Albertsons - Not Union - well think about it they only have like a couple stores left enough said. 10% 4. Food City - Enough Said - gross as hell! 10% 5. Ranch Market - Ever heard of a shelf? - dirty - Not to be mean but not one of the employee's spoke english - Customer Service anyone? 70% 6. Fry's - Fresh Food (very true) - Famous Low Prices (keep prices down even with high gas prices) - Our People are great (that guy/girl obviously lost their job or quit) - Prices are great once again with gas you save alot - Shopping exprience (we act like we are family and you joined our family for an hour or more or even less) - Get what you want plus a little more (when have you ever went to a walmart and said mmmm I wanna try a strawberry? You could get a shoplifting charge for taking a sample. We let you try most of our foods unless they are raw or in a package.) See what I mean I have never witnessed mean people I'm mean to alot of people but for a reason because they are too young to buy something and I just say No they get mad and leave. I even got called names but I never got mad....I just picked up the alcohol and put it back so becareful on what you say thats kinda mean.

Greeter should be fired

File your complaint with the management of Fry's and tell them exactly what happened. I never, ever had that problem with anywhere I shopped at. There are times I walk into a supermarket and buy a few things and walk out of there without using a shopping cart or a basket. Never had that problem before at Smith's, Ralph's Vons, Stater Bros., Smart & Final... anywhere. bottom line is, don't let those yahoos get away with that nonsense. The greeter should be fired right on the spot, and if he ever came across me and did that stuff, I'd tell em to take the shopping cart and stick it. Then again you don't want to get the police involved, and as corrupt as the law enforcement is in Maricopa County, especially in Mesa, its a good idea not to do anything that could result in a disturbance.
