I am not new to computers. Nor to Gateway. This is my 3rd PC from Gateway. Each one has had problems. (glutton for punishment I guess)... But it is my last system from them.

Seems Gateway tech supports answer to everything is re-install windows. What they don't tell the client is the nightmares that follow this re-installation. They don't explain you will probably have to download new drivers to make your sound work again. They don't warn you much of your hardware and probably software will no longer be recognized by the PC. They don't tell you they won't support most of these problems either..

They told me to reinstall windows due to tower shutting itself down and the wonderful Gateway Go-Back locking up. It could not be disabled or bypassed. So I did reinstall windows. (8 hours). Still problems. Several tech persons later - they decided it was the power source.. So they sent me a new one.. Yes.. this fixed the shutting down problem. Re-installing windows was not necessary (as usual)..

Many new problems now. Computer won't recognize much of the same software and hardware that was working fine before. Will tech support help??? No.. Since I did not buy this hardware from them they will not support it. Even though they have or do sell the exact same hardware. (this is a BIG RIPOFF) Plain bull. They blame the hardware. Tell you to contact the product company for answers.

The product companies are nice and do all they can to help you re-configure your system - which should be Gateway tech supports job not Kodak or Epson.

So here I sit with a big $$$$ system and cannot use my scanner, my dig camera or my slave drive to back up. The dang thing feezes up, sound goes up and down and on and off and more.

All I get is lip service from Gateway. No answers or solutions. But I have logged in about 20 phone hours and have at least 20 pages of email from tech support. Reading it all back is better than the funny papers.

Last system I had I finally took it to town to a local techician who fixed it in one hour. Sure it cost me but worth it to bypass days and days of trying to get a solution from Gateway tech support. Its been 17 days now - with this one. DON'T WASTE YOUR money paying for extended warranty.. Heck - the first year they include with purchase is worthless let alone paying for more.

I am now shopping for a new PC.. It will not be from Gateway.. I will take my chances elsewhere. Although I am not done with the issue with Gateway.. I will continue to hound tech, customer support and anyone else there that I can until I get some satisfaction.

when you want to buy a computer....you shop around....don't just go to big money brand name manufactorers and buy whatever they have.... i am a software engineer in silicon valley, ca....LUCKILY FOR ME I KNOW A FEW THINGS ABOU WINDOWS.... YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM....LEARN IT....LIVE IT......95% OF TECH CALLS ARE SOFTWARE RELATED....AND NOT EVERY TECH WILL HAVE AN ANSWER FOR YOU... WINDOWS IS VERY COMPLICATED AND COMPLEXED.. ... OF, COUSE IF YOUR GETTING A SYSTEM32 ERROR ALL THE TIME ITS SOMETHING YOUR DOING WRONG....I HAVE NOTICED THAT MOST OF ALL THESE SOFTWARE PROBLEMS SEEM TO OCCUR TO SOME CUSTOMERS BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE THE OPERATING SYSTEM......THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS MADE BY MICROSOFT NOT THE MANUFACTURER.... MY SUGGESTION...RESEARCH, TAKE A COMPUTER COURSE, LEARN WINDOWS BEFORE YOU BUY...I HAVE OWNED 8 COMPUTERS FROM ALL KINDS OF MANUFACTURERS AND I HAVE BUILT MY OWN...ALL COMPUTERS ARE ALIKE

Well the computer is in no better shape than before.. (Aug 10th to now which is Sept 3rd).. Gateway has not resolved anything. So I have again - been computer shopping.. Don't waste your time with the other big boys - they are all alike.. Tech supports are all alike too.. I know - I have talked to them and asked them all the questions..

SOLUTION:.. Once before (with a previous bad gateway) I got tired of Tech so took the PC to town... (Locally owned store - where they build and sell their own)... They fixed the dang thing in an hour. Where i had been on the Phone to Gateway for near 2 weeks previous.

Well I figured why not GIVE THEM THE BUSINESS??? Heck they are right here.. You got 1 or 2 people to deal with no matter what the problem.... No more hours on hold, talking to 200 people who all have a different fix in mind.. None of the hassle... No shipping charges either..

Think they cost more??? NO WAY... The system I ordered was top of the line Pent 4... I used specs from Dell and Gateway for my video card, sound card, modem, and more.. Getting a 40x10x40 CD_RW and the whole works... Flat screen monitor and all.. Cost $1450. It will be ready for me in 5 days... Yes.. same 1 year warranty.. (but - without all the hassle) the guy who built it will be the same guy I talk to if I have problems..

Support your local dealers... QUIT WASTING YOUR TIME, MONEY AND HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH THOSE OTHER GUYS..
