On saturday August 20th I parked my car at the Safeway store located on 1335 Webster Street, San Francisco.
A group of friends and I went to have food and upon our return (about 2 1/2 hrs later) the car was gone, (along with my friend's SUV). We spotted a towing truck and realized that our vehicles had been towed. We asked the driver about it but only gave us the number to call which was the towing company. Golden Gate Tow, Inc 415 826.8866; located at 355 Barneveld Avenue San Francisco, CA 94124  to get to their location we had to call a taxi cab. All of this occurred around 12:00 - 1:30 am  When we got to the warehouse a few people were already in line waiting to get their car back. We all were charged from $460 to $490 depending on how the car had to be towed.  A number of irregularities from this company appeared unjustified such as:

Although Safeway has signs on its lot about the consequences of parking for extensive period of time, it does not however specifies the fees that an owner can be charged and golden gate tow, allegedly justifies that their fees in their signs cannot be posted for drivers to see them.

The employees refused to give their supervisor full name as well as the manager of the Safeway store

They provided a number to call for further questions (which in fact was SFPD telephone number and they had no responsibility but to inform us that our car was with this company!)

They were very rude to people and give you no choice at all but to pay in FULL the $490 if you wanted you car back that same night, otherwise you had to pay $80 per day!
We only obtained the first name of two employees and the supervisor: Jesus Ponce, Ernesto (driver) and Marcos
(supervisor, which was not there at the time and the only way to contact him was to wait until Monday morning)

My main concern, along with the excessive fee, is who regulates this? who makes this decisions and how much they can charge you for parking in private property, even if you are a customer of the establishment?

I went online and reviewed Golden Gate Tow, inc and found a lot of irregularities from their actions.

I hope this awakens your interest to investigate about this company. I'm willing to go forward on this and go into details about how people can be aware of this. As I previously mentioned, economy is bad right now, and even thought I understand the fact that limit time parking is inadequate, others should realize that excessive charging is unjustified.

You parked. You pay.

"who makes this decisions"

YOU made the decision to park on private property.

"even if you are a customer of the establishment"

That isn't relevant because you were NOT a customer of the establishment.

You parked. You pay. That's a fair penalty.

I have a suggestion on how to avoid this in the future...

DON'T PARK WHERE YOU"RE NOT DOING BUSINESS.  No need to thank me for this bit of wisdom.

I dealt with people like you on a daily basis in a private parking lot, was called names and threatened by the people asked to move their cars.

You get ZERO sympathy here. Make this a learning experience and stop blaming others .
