Jennie, I feel your pain and you have my sympathy. I used to live in N. California before I moved to Florida in 2005. Back in 2003 I went to the local office for GE in Palo Alto, CA to find out information for membership and their fees. I was quoted $4000 for just a one year standard membership and was told that GE requires all new members to sign and abide by the member contract. The staff member made many promises and told me how they were the best and most popular of the dating/singles services for adults. Of course they must have told you the same and made similar promises to you as well. I told them I wanted to think about it and surprisingly there was no pressure on me to join. Later I did some research and contacted the same office to ask if they belonged to the local chapter of the Better Business Bureau. The person I spoke with told me she did not know and that she was a recent new hire. This woman seemed quite ignorant and because she worked there I expected her to be able to know the answer to my question. I therefore concluded that Great Expectations has a practice of hiring receptionists and office workers who are temps and these people are told very little information about the business's practices. So then they are as much in the dark about GE's policies to the same level as anyone who goes into their office to inquire about membership. Remember these women are temps and not permanent hires so they don't need to know too much! I did contact my local BBB office and to my surprise I was told that GE is not a member at all. Anyone considering buying an overpriced membership should be very wary and cautious and check with your local chapter of the BBB to see if Great Expectations is registered. I don't know if GE is a member in any BBB office here in Florida. Even if that chapter in Clearwater is a member I would still steer clear of joining GE. They charge very high member fees that are very exorbitant and they will make promises that they have no intention of keeping! I did contact the office once and they would not give me much information by phone. They insist on talking to people in the office. I have read so many complaints here on the Ripoff Report from members in other states and it's not surprising that GE has so many numerous compaints from disgruntled members everywhere! Best of luck to you Jennie, Lorenzo St. Petersburg, FL

Jeannie- I had a bad experience with their Atlanta operation. However, mine was the events having predominately women attending with only a handful of men. Most of the men were younger than me or the ones my age had no children and were looking for a baby maker. I just filed a report. Laura
