Complaint Review: Haircuttery - Crystal City - Arlington Virginia

Not true AT ALL. This complaint is the race card at its finest and it's not fair to this establishment. News flash - not all customer service that doesn't jump when you say jump has something to do with race.

If you want preferential treatment due to race, I suggest you visit the Dress Barn in that same shopping center. Now THERE'S a racist store. Try being a white person in that dump. 'Nuff said - and I'm not racially sensitive.

Regarding the Crystal City Hair Cuttery - I've been in that place multiple times as a white person and have had to wait because they are busy. If I need a service as a walk in that requires additional time I have had to wait or come back. The reality is that that place is busy. If you don't have an appointment and it so happens they are very busy, you may have to wait or come back because they don't have the time to do the job you need regardless of your color, sex or planetary citizenship, or what the heck ever.

Further, I've been there late and seen more people of "color" than white people more often than not being served. If you want proof, walk in there anytime time of the day or day of the week and count the ratio of black/white and you'll find that it's rather lopsided - in favor of blacks.

Get over yourself. This isn't 1968 and blaming your dissatisfaction on your race is not only false, but incredibly offensive.

I have been a customer at the Crystal City Hair Cuttery location since 2005.  Maybe in 2004 there were problems at this location, but I doubt it.  I am no expert on womens' styling and have no idea if the requested service is normal or unusual.  I do know that this location is frequently busy and walk-in service can be problematic.  Many customers do make appointments.  Black customers are by no means unusual in this store.  Black stylests are also by no means unusual in this store.  The vast majority of the sytlests are minority.  There are Latin, Black, Vietnamese, Arab, pretty much everything but white.  So if you are looking for a business where 'the man' is holding you down, you are pretty much at the wrong place.  If you don't like Latinas, Arabs, or Vietnamese, you won't much like this place (there are all kinds of racism, not all of it is white against black).
On the other hand their hair cuts are OK obsessionally less than OK, they are the cheapest around, so I guess it figures.

To do a proficent roller set,there are things that do indeed make it "specialty service". If the metal clips (if these kind are used) that secure the roller in are not positioned correctly(away from the scalp area),when placed under the dryer,can burn the client's scalp. If the roller is not placed tightly enough around the hair,the set will not last as long. If the rod is placed too tightly around the chemically relaxed hair,it can cause breakage to the hair. If the client is left under the dryer too long,this can also cause hair breakage and damage. These are the things that makes a roller set a speciality style. I am sorry, but I would rather wait on a stylist who is proficent in this type of service that taking a risk with an inexperienced stylist who specializes in just haircuts,(or a 12 year old for that matter)than face months repairing hair damge. IMHO

Thirdly, Peter in Nowhere, Alabama needs to chill out and examine his own racial senitivity. I am black so I think I have much more knowledge on black hair than you do. Black hair is often DRY, which makes any hair nappy and unmanageable. Any good stylist can easily combat that with a good conditioning treatment. My hair is quite long, very manageable and the envy of even many of my white friends. As for her being 'too cheap' why should she feel bad about wanting to save a feww bucks. What are you saying, black people can't be thrifty? While it's true that sometimes black people confuse bad service with racism, I think clearly it was both. It is because of people like you that people in the civilized world avoid the South like the plague. While America and most of the world are in 2006, you harken back to the days of the loud-mouthed idiot that spews filth with no logic behind it. Kathy, I suggest that you start doing your own hair because nobody knows your hair better than you do.

Why then, would you choose to go to hair cuttery? Methinks it is because you are too cheap to go to a salon specializing in black hair and specialty services. As we all know, such black salons cost a great deal more than hair cuttery, and are perfectly suited for what you wanted to have done. Before crying the race card here, why not look at the real picture and place the blame where it belongs?

Well, first comment is you should try to do as previously suggested and make an appointment. I make an appointment for everything, my hair and my nails because I don't like to wait and there aren't any problems. Also, you should try to stick to going to predominately black salons. I know they tend to charge more but at least you won't feel degrated or like you should have come through the "blacks entrance" back door. Plus you'll get better service and more than likely a better style. Also depending on the type of style you have consider a barbershop. You'd be surprise how much they know about styling a woman's hair, but check them out first and find out if they have other female clients.

Just to let you know,roller sets are considered a "speciality service" at Hair Cuttery.So it is very possible that stylists were sitting around and not waiting on you. Not all stylists do roller sets,it is optional.All stylists are required to do are shampoo,cut and blowdry services,thats it.Some do not do nothing but this.Also if you get a set then a wrap,I can see why someone would not want to start on this at 650 pm, as some hair types can take up to 3-4 hours depending the texture,and porosity of the hair. So the bottom line is not all stylists do sets,so if you want to go back there to get your hair done,it may be best to call in advance, ask who all does Hair sets(and whatever else you usually get done afterwards,like wrap,etc)and find out their times they work.I am not sure if you know this,but at Hair Cuttery,you can request certain people,even some are allowed to schedule appointments. That way,you can be confident you are there at a time when someone who does sets is there,and you will get someone who knows how to do it correctly. Have a good day

Did the salon you went to have any stylists experienced with black hair working? I remember being told that black hair is a lot different than white hair and we had only 2 stylists that had the needed experience with black hair in the salon I worked in. If they were booked up with appointments, the salon would inform a black customer they would have to come back at another time for service, BUT always inform them why. I'm not sure if this is what happened to you and if it was, they should have informed you of why they were refusing you service. I hope you found a better salon to give your business to in the future.
