Last Saturday, 1/11/03, I needed to replace the water heater in the Condo I own in Santee, but which I have rented out. As I live in Poway (about 20 miles north of Santee), I called the Santee store to ensure they had the 40 gallon electric water heater with 9-year warrantee in stock. After about 10 minutes on hold, I was assured that the Santee store had 3 or 4 in stock.

I accordingly traveled to the condo and disconnected the water lines and opened the drain valve to allow the old water heater to drain.

I then went to the Santee store to pickup the new water heater. But, guess what. They did NOT have the 40 gallon, 9-year warrantee, electric water heater in stock. They offered to, "SPECIAL ORDER IT FOR ME." When I explained my situation to them, their attitiude was one of, "TOO BAD!"

I really wanted something better than the 6-year water heater, but they wouldn't even offer me a discount on the 12-year price. Had Home Depot been honest with me on the phone, I would have located another source for the water heater (Sears had them on sale for a few dollar less). However, having no other option, I picked up the 6-year water heater.

And all I can say about this is Home Depot can count themselves lucky they don't have any front windows in their stores, as should this cheap water heater fail before 9 years, you would give it back to Home Depot through the front window! As it stands now, they may rest assured that Dixieline and Lowe's will get a lot more of my business, as I am through with Home Depot and I will NOT hesitate to spread the word on their shabby treatment of customers.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

I have to agree with the plumber from Canada.... you get what you pay for, and when you try to save ust a few dollars going to any hardware store, you are basically helping to put your local small plumber out of business. The real problem happens if that water heater needs to be serviced.... most of these stores havent a clue when it comes to serviceing what they sell...they tell you to call a plumber!!! so you call your local plumber and beg the guy to service something you did ot buy from him thats a slap in the face too..... some hard ware stores have the atitude that when its out their door, its not their problem anymore.....they just give you a 1-800 number to call for help ......and leave you holding the bag.. call a plumber first.. this is my honest opinion...

Why would you choose to purchase a hot water tank through any home hardware or Home Depot? Isn't your neighbor, the plumber, worth supporting. Is home Depot their for you when your pipes are frozen? Are they their for you when your drains are backed up? Will they look after you in an emergency that occurs in the middle of the night? I challenge any home center to provide the labour warranties that your local plumber can offer you. Would you buy fillings for your teeth from Home Depot if they offered them? So, why would you go to the hardware store to have your plumbing problem solved? Sure they may charge less, but they can't look after your plumbing problems like your neighborhood plumber. Support your plumbers.

The Home Depot in Santee, CA was built at the time only because they feared that thier rival (at the time) was planning a new Homebase there. Even though the El Cajon store was just a few miles down the road, they didn't want to allow them to win that bid. I was hired at the El Cajon Home Depot in 1993 and moved to the Midwest to open the Chicago stores 1995. I was later recruited by a rep firm to open stores all over the midwest. Home Depot is no longer that Great store everyone used to love. Bernie Marcus & Arthur Blank (the founders)have left the company. Moral in the stores are at an all time low. Home Depot has centralized all there buying decisions to Alanta, GA., I now live in Minnesota and the stores here are void of needed winter items because they are completly clueless to what people need here. An ex General Electric CEO is now running the company (GE owned Montgomery Wards the last few years they were alive) The good news is that after San Diego has been screwed all these years by Home Depot and paying inflated prices because of the lack of competion, Lowes will begin building there new store where KCBQ radio now sits this fall. You now have to do your part and vote for the better operator with your dollars. I still do shop at Home Depot but very rarely because I find it difficult to complete my projects with there limited selection. In my neck of the woods we have Menards and they see the most of my money. Ex Home Depot employee: #676 1909 2805 Ramsey Boyd
