I hold a CDL with passenger endorsement, I drive a tour bus or did, I recently quit because of a random drug test, I have been a model employee from day one passed my pre employment drug screening no problem. I had a couple of days off and was called in to take a random, why? I never went to work high and never had an accident so why do this ? Hurt i had to quit to save my license.

Things may be changing in regards to drug laws

I agree with the original poster. Everyone should know though that legislation is finally pending to make sure that just harmful drugs like marijuana, alcohol and cough syrup are tested for during drug tests. Drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine will be exempted because they are okay and sometimes enhance driving performance and fuel efficiency. Already state troopers are loathe to bust anyone for crank when they do truck searches at weigh stations. This should clear up any problems with Horizon and help truckers "put that hammer down"!

Tests are required.

Bus and trucking compaines are required by federal regulations to adminster these tests. They must test about half of their drivers every year on a "random" basis. They can also test at any time if they have a "reasonable suspicion" a driver is under the influence of drugs. Under the federal rules, the consequences for refusing to take a test are practically the same as for failing. Most companies are going to fire you right away. If you try to get another CDL job, and they know that you worked for the old company, the old company has to tell the new company that you refused the test. How a refusal or failure affects your license is a matter of state law. I don't agree with a lot of drug laws or widespread testing by employers, but I agree that "zero tolerance" for bus drivers is a good policy.

I wonder about the comment you quit to save your license.

Most large companies that have employees operating their vehicles on public roads have random drug testing, so I see nothing wrong with the companies request if it is truly random. What I wonder about is you saying to save my license I quit! If you are drug free taking the test would not cost you your license and if you are not drug free you should not be operating a vehicle transporting people on the public roads. I do not see a problem with the company in this instance.

That's why it's a *random* drug test

Many companies now have random drug tests- in other words, they can call you in whenever they want to give a sample. This is to prevent drug users from expecting their tests and to randomly screen for drug use. It's nothing personal. They can even draw names out of a hat. You did not have to quit- you only had to do the test. I bet that when you were hired you had to sign a form saying that you were aware of this policy. It is not their fault you didn't read your contract. And if you didn't have something to hide, why did you quit? It just makes you look suspicious. Mary
