NOW TO THE ORIGINAL REPORT THAT WAS FILED

IPA - International Profit Association I GOT LUCKY, IPA TRIED TO GET ME, TOO. BUFFALO GROVE Illinois

I had had a similar experience with a company named "George S. May" over a dozen years ago and it had stayed with me so that when IPA approached me, I was on guard, but not from the start.

It all started with an innocent phone call, they wanted to help small businesses. I told them I did not have time on the day they wanted. He said it would just be a "smile and a handshake." I said OK. When Mel Stuart showed up, I said, "Oh, you are my 'smile and a handshake' guy." He looked startled, but since my next appointment was late, he came into the office. We talked, it sounded so good I found myself agreeing to a second meeting when my partner could be present.

In the mean time, I talked to my accountant and mentioned the encounter. He got wide-eyed and asked if it was George S. May and to not let them back. I said no, it was IPA. He looked it up on the internet, saw nothing bad and said OK.

At our meeting with Mr. Stuart the next week, both of us were interested in all the wonderful things his company could do for us. I asked the cost. Mr Stuart said it would cost NOTHING but a cup of coffee for the representative. We agreed to the next meeting and signed a paper which stated we would owe $750. but Mel kept saying just ignore that, the lawyers made them put that line in.

The next day, Steve McCrillis showed up and spent the entire day with us - 8 AM until 5:30 PM. My head was swimming as it is a very intense experience. The tactics are to build you up by "recognizing" your courage and fortitude for being in business and then making you feel like a total idiot for not knowing all the answers to all the questions he fires at you, then says "Why not?" to anything you can't answer. And he asked for the $750. Both of us bristled at that and told him what Mel had said.

So I turned to my trusty computer and tried to find information on IPA. I did find a couple of titles that sounded negative, but because IPA pays to be listed on the search engine, anything negative is blocked. In that I mean the title of the website is listed but the link does not work. Finally I "Googled" the firm and found the negative remarks I was looking for. The best was an article from "INC." Magazine, dated in 2001, which started off fairly even handed but finished with some very damaging reports from unhappy former customers. FYI: the president of IPA used to work for Geo. S May!

So when Mr. McCrillis returned the next morning, I met him without my partner, saying we both had to sign or neither would sign. And we left it with a smile and a handshake - and no money! Like I said, we got lucky.

I did receive two follow up calls from IPA, but I was able to deflect both.

I'm so sorry to read the reports from the others who did get taken, but my heart and a huge THANKS go to them as they may be able to save some others in the future from the tactics of IPA.
