I recently purchased a 15 month old Doberman for $1500  from Irina Barrett, aka Canis Maximus. The

pictures of the dog were beautiful.  Looked like one of the fittest dogs I have ever seen.

Not the case when she arrived she was very skinny you could see all of her ribs.  Very dehydrated.  I am guessing she was brought to the airport by Irina in the morning.  I received her at 2p and her first pee was 8 oclock that night.  I grabbed onto her skin and pulled it up and it stayed like putty.  A sure sign of dehydration.

She has very visible scars on her head, ears, legs, and a few on her body. When asked why I was told she was being dominated by other dogs.  I wouldnt say Irina was abusing the dog per say, but surely wasnt doing her job of protecting the dog and keeping her healthy and safe.  The dog is still very nervous at dinner time and afraid in general.  She has a hard time eating and when you go near her she runs away.

I did have her checked out by my vet, and the vet said she was in good shape other than needing to put some weight on.  She did have a bad ear infection.

I also was told I would get a limited registration. When the dog arrived, I only got the pedigree certificate.  I asked for the registration and I was told it was a full registration and she was not going to give that to me.  Why would that be since the dog is scheduled for spay?  And besides all I wanted was what I paid for.  I didnt think that it was unreasonable to get what I expected to receive. She is not good to responding to questions and she is somewhat rude and short.

All in all I was disappointed in the shape she came in.

Supposedly she knew commands and was also house broken.  Not the case. I wouldnt trade this dog for
anything as I feel as though I recued her from a bad place.  I would think twice about buying anything from her.  I have seen other complaints about her importing sick dogs.  Buyer beware.

As you can see my initial report was spot on.  She spent so much time writing a rebutal, only to look foolish in the end.  Again I love the dog I got, she needs work but she is coming along.  She has physical and emotional scars, but I think she will be ok.  I thank the person that has contributed to my article and made me aware of the hearing.  Makes me feel very good that I knew what was going on.  I really hope she is shut down forever.  I am sickened hearing of the living conditions but feel better knowing I did my part to save a dog.

This "breeder" claims to keep her dog's in good condition, yet she is under investigation. Mrs. Barrett is housing a high number of dogs without proper licensing (no current kennel or breeding license and many adult dogs without current rabies vaccinations). She recently even surrendered several of her dog's over to a rescue and many were found sick or with other health issues. Mrs. Barrett breeds Dobermans, Great Danes, French Bull Dogs, Boxers, and even had/has German Shepherds. Look at all her different websites and compare!

It would take much longer than a couple days for a "severely dehydrated" and skinny dog to look normal... unless what was reported was untrue...

Stick to the facts...

Lets start with the accusations.

1. The dog was $1000, not $1500. Thats half the price of what my puppies sell for. And all are always placed with a limited registration.

2. I bred the Dog, I raised the Dog. Her first home didnt work out. I took her back.  Within a couple weeks it was clear that she wasnt getting along with one older female. So, I, as a RESPONSIBLE breeder, started looking for a new home for her. All this was communicated to the Buyer PRIOR to purchase. To suggest that she was mauled by DOGS, abused or whatever, is slanderous. Unless your accusation has proof, i.e. vet report of injuries, like broken bones, bruises, inflammed wounds, or you actually witnessed the fact of any kind of abuse with your own eyes, refrain from voicing your ideas or they would constitute libel... unless that's your intention... hmmm

3. How she lived at her previous home, is a different story.  She stayed at the kennel while with us. That was communicated to the buyers wife over the phone. I never assumed she was house broken, we tried crate training. I also described why I was looking for a new home for her all over again: a. she was bullied by an older female, and b. she was a very active dog and I had no time to work with one more young dog.

4. The Dog was vet checked a day prior to shipping. She was examined and accepted for shipping at the cargo facility. She spent half a day in a crate on the plane. And what, when she pees after she arrives after enduring all the stress of travel is something I should be accused of? Or is that proof of her being severely dehydrated?

5. The Buyer has yet to provide any supporting veterinary documentation of his accusations.
    - If the Dog were severely dehydrated, what kind of treatment was administered? If no treatment was administered to a severely dehydrated dog, shouldnt it be called dog abuse? Neglect? Shouldnt she receive subQ fluids for dehydration?
   - Also, how competent is the Buyer with just one other dog compared to a licensed vet and an experienced breeder with 18 years of experience?
   - If the Dog was skinny, how was that evaluated? Pictures?
   - I want to see pictures of her coat after shipping because she had a clean and shiny coat when she left and everything the Buyer is describing is outright lying. If the dog had severe dehydration or were underweight, no licensed veterinarian would issue a health certificate for air shipping which could potentially be fatal for a dog in such condition.

Attached are the pictures of the same Dog while living with us. A couple days before shipping. And pictures that were sent to me a few days after shipping. Nowhere does it show that the dog was abused, neglected or starved.

Here is an email from the Buyers wife right after the dog was picked up and arrived at the new house: She is doing good....she was in need of a bath when she arrived. She has scares...on her nose, hind legs and around ears.  Do you know what they are from?  She seems very skittish, but warming up.  Great with my young son...good with our current dog. I'm hoping that she will get more confident in herself as the days pass.  She is very receptive to snuggling with me and treats.  She has eaten dinner...and done her business.  Honestly, what a sweet sweet dog.  She's curious...energetic and kind.  I'm so happy that we found her and she will be apart of our family. We look forward to giving her an amazing life. On Dec 22, 2012.
Then on 28 December, the Buyer voiced concerns about the scars, being skinny, dehydrated, which were addressed and explained if the concerns had any validity, all the Buyer's emails were promptly answered in a normal manner. The end of the email from the Buyer said: She is doing fantastic with Toby.  And you were right about her and kids.  She loves kids more than adults or other dogs.  It's quite amusing.  Loves the tennis ball.  Seems as somebody played with her.  She's good at it.  She is negative for all parasites and negative for heart worm etc.  she does have an ear infection.  All in all she is a fantastic dog and everybody fell in love with her.  Will take some work with commands and potty training but she is getting there.  She is good about potty out doors.  Not so much with the poop.  I will return your contract next week when I get back to work. Matt Kimball.

Attached is a picture of her scars, which were mainly on her cheeks. Again, my dogs are walked together 4 times a day, so to prevent this from happening was to re-home the Dog, which I did.
Any breeder who has ever raised a litter of Dobermans would say that even puppies can scratch each other significantly.

Now, what really caused this rip-off report Not the scars. Or severe dehydration :) No. Both, the Buyer and his wife, were satisfied with the Dog It is the registration.

The Dog was initially registered with a full registration which always stayed with me. Full registration = breeding rights. Everywhere on my website I put notes, sometimes in red, that we do not give breeding rights or full registration. I sent the Dogs original AKC pedigree, with her microchip, along with all other documentation. This is what Ive always done and never had any issues before.

The ads for the Dog mentioned that the Dog would come with an AKC pedigree, shot record, health guarantee. And the Buyer received all that. What I promised I delivered. Actually, it is me who is getting ripped off, not the Buyer. I didnt gain anything by re-homing a nice, well-bred and very good looking dog. I even suggested taking her back, which would have been at my own expense. So, really, what is the purpose of this report? Vengeance? Psychosis? Personality issues? Slander?

And its not the registration that is the problem, its the manner this issue was handled by the Buyer. Ive had owners of co-owned dogs ask for AKC registration certificates and they were given those upon receipt of spay/neuter proof. The Buyer decided that sending threats, bullying messages and posting a rip-off report would serve him better.

Attached is also an AKC inspection report.

We do not have any valid complaints from any of the past buyers. Instead, we have over 500 positive reviews for the imports that we used to import in the past and mostly for the dogs weve bred, some from as far as Asia, Latin American, Bahamas, Turks and Cacaos Islands, Virgin Islands, France, Sweden.

When issues arise, we are always eager to help as long as that issue is valid and the Buyer is respectful.
