They can ask for a number or an address or they can say that it is important that you contact them other than that they cannot say you owe them money or tell them they are pursuing legal action against you.

You seem to know why they are looking for you. My guess is that someone is trying to serve you with a summons so they can sue you in civil court. Perhaps you should consult with an attorney who specializes in bankruptcy to determine if bankruptcy protection under chapter 7 or chapter 13 is applicable and benificial to your current situation.
