I was job searching on craiglist and came across a receptionist/administrative position that pays 18.50/hr. I immediately sent my resume, and got a response the next day. It was like an online interview, and i got another email from the same email type (live.com) and he wanted to set up an interview with yahoo messenger, which i didn't respond to.

The following day, i got another email saying I was approved but that I would be working from home. That I would get a check/moneyorder in the mail to purchase the software I would be needing. I gave them my name and address, and two days later got 2 $950 checks from CIBC , with Jerry D. HOlbrook as the Remitter. I received another email for the instructions to do with the check. I was told to cash them in my bank, and purchase the software i would be needing, and to send the remaining balance via western union to a certain address, for a laptop and printer to be sent to me. This is when It got fishy.

"why would someone send somebody 2 $950 checks without knowing anything about them but their name and address?"

I searched and searched online for the company name they claim to be and nothing. i mean nothing! I then looked up the address that I was supposed to mail the remaing balance to and it was for a person at a dog training school. The envelope where the checks came in had a residential address in NY, which was not the person i had been emailing. I emailed her back and asked her if the company website was up, because she told me it was under a url change. I also asked her that before i did anything with the checks i wanted to make sure why was i sending it to Dog training facility. The response to my email was "The company website is not up yet.Follow through with the instruction i sent you." Turns out the checks are Fake! I searched jerry D. Holbrook and found I was not the only victim.

This is an obvious scam.

This type of scam comes in many disguises such as mystery shopper, lottery winner, and many more.  When they send a check and ask to be sent money back, it is a scam.

I don't know why the government is not cracking down on these predators.

You said you were a victim, does this mean you sent the money to them?
