I received a letter from the RBC FINANCIAL International Finance Department, By mail. I will state it word for word so that anyone else who receives this same letter knows it's a scam. Above left hand side in red-Claim number ***-******-** under it states AWARD CLAIM NOTIFICATION and FINAL NOTICE.

The letter reads, We are pleased to advise you that you are a winner in the second category of Sweepstakes and Lottery Draw held on October 31,2008. Your name was attached to an ENTRY SLIP with serial number *******and drew the lucky winning numbers **-**-**-**. You are therefore entitled to the sum of US$125,00.00(one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars) payable to you by bank draft, money order or certified check. In accordance with the lottery and sweepstakes Commission policy, your prize money has been forwarded to our Clearing/disburesment institution to release same to you. Consequently, enclosed is a check for US$4,850.00(Four thousand eight hundred and fifty dollars) deducted from your winning. The purpose of this check is to assist you pay for the Government Service Tax(GST).

The payment information is as stated below: Tax amount: US$3,785.00(three thousand seven hundred and eighty five dollars). Payment Method: MONEY GRAM. You are advised to contact your assigned claim agent, JOHN ANDERSON AT 1-416-897-8311. Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm(ET) for further instructions on how to claim your winnings. Please do not act on this notice until you speak to your claim agent. Signed at the bottom John Garfield (Promotions Manager)

Now I did lots of research on this guy and turns out that number is his cell number. I also contacted UNIQUE VACATIONS because the check was tooken from them, and the name of the bank was Suntrust Bank in Carrollton, GA. There have been numerous reports of fraudulant activities through them.

PLEASE, if you receive a similar letter report it. If you actually won the lottery or sweepstakes, you will not be given a check and told to pay it right away. It will either be taken out automatically with your request or you pay it yourself. Dont be fooled by this guy. Anyone with any information similar to mine, please contact authorities.

I am a 15 year old and in the mail I got the same scam as NaTasha did. My aunt was trying to go and put the check in the bank because they way they wrote it, it seemed as if it were real. The bank teller looked at it and she said that she would put it in the bank until it comes out clear. But today, I looked closely at the check and I could see the word VOID on it. I felt very bad because I made out a list of things I wanted and giving money to the church. I did however think that it was real because I knew the RBC centura bank. I have not called Susan Thompson or John Anderson, but I plan on calling them and stating my words. I want justice for being fooled.

THE CHECK WAS THE KEY TO IDENTIFYING THE SCAM

No LEGITIMATE LOTTERY OR SWEEPSTAKES will send you a check to pay taxes or processing fees with - just to have you send it back to them. THOSE WILL BE TAKEN OUT OF YOUR LEGITIMATE WINNINGS before they send any winnings. The best way to check these out is NOT CALLING THE SCAMMERS! They use legitmate business names - but bogus addresses so they appear legitimate. Try searching on Lottery or Sweepstakes Scams on the Internet. Take the check to bank and ASK THE BANK TO CHECK IT OUT - BEFORE YOU DEPOSIT IT. NEVER CASH CHECKS YOU DID NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE AND NEVER WIRE TRANSFER MONEY TO ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW.
