In the beginning JIU was very supportive both academically and administratively . The closer I got to the finish line the worse it got. I made it to the comprehensive exam which one has to pass to enter the last phase of the doctorate program. I had a 3.5 going into this class/or exam. Up to this point I had written hundreds of papers with approving reviews from professors including the two who were grading the exam. I first went into the class and had to write five questions based on previous classes that had to be approved by instructors and then answer those questions. I got through three before time ran close. There was little to no feedback from instructors. The exam was setup like previous classes as far as timeline but all if a sudden I am told it is not an 8 wk class. First I heard of this. The second time continuously no feedback or timely approvals on questions. Talked to advisor was told by professor best if I drop it an take it again. I was told I would have to pay for class out of pocket because passed the drop cutoff. I agree to pay for that one class and filled out drop form as instructed by school. Next thing I am told the school submitted the paper at wrong time making me responsible to pay for whole semester and conveniently set me up on a payment plan.

So then i entered the last chance to pass this course or your out. I was nervous but I knew u could do it. I formulated questions and submitted early so I would have enough time. I even worked in the responses while I waited for approvals. I got no replies except once lead professor said that both of them had signed off on my questions. The other professor had no idea what the lead professor was talking about. So it came to final night I completed five questions and five responses with no feedback of which it calls for in class setup. One hour before cutoff I get a call from lead professor screaming at me that I posted in the wrong format which I knew I hadn't but she would not listen and called me a liar. I told her I would repost and she hinted u would not pass. So I went into forum copied and reported in same format and it was fine. She failed me and the other one said without the questions he could not grade any of them. So he had obviously not looked at anything until then. This is the same man that told me u should submit my work to journals to be published in the first exam.

So that leads me to owe large debt and no possible way to complete my doctorate. I appealed the decision not to let me take this over because it was not my fault the last two times. These instructors have very busy lives an reach at JIU as a sideline and do not give students the direction they need. It is wrong and they just assume the instructors are right. These place affords you only debt and broken promises.

Dear Donna,

JIU requires all doctorate students to successfully complete the requirements outlined by their program of study in order to receive their terminal degree.  One of these requirements is successful completion of the comprehensive exam.  Because of your experiences with the faculty who administered the exam, we allowed you several opportunities to successfully complete this exam via the student appeals process. We work hard to ensure each student receives a fair opportunity to complete their degree.  As an accredited university, JIU adheres to the same strict standards and requirements found at any other accredited post-secondary institution.  Failure to satisfactorily complete graduation requirements results in failure to earn a degree.  As you know, expectations for student work at the doctorate level are very high.

Sincerely,

JIU Academic Staff
