The architect of military scholarship scandal at University of Illinois, Avijit Ghosh, landed a $339,000 patronage job from University President Joe White. Ghosh served on the Presidential Search Committee that got White his job. Joe White looks more like Daleys convicted patronage chief Robert Sorich every day.
Ghosh was the architect of the scheme to renege on a scholarship promise to veterans and soldiers by altering admissions procedures after veterans were accepted. Honest veterans thought they would get a fair shake from the University, who promised them 110 full ride MBA scholarships, only to be told the program was full while the university put civilians in their seats through the back door.
Ghoshs background in geography gave him the know-how to run technology and economic development for the University of Illinois, according to Joe White, who gave him the job. Since Ghosh helped White get his job, White returned the favor. Thats what one former business school dean does for another former business school dean. Thats a sweet deal for Ghosh, but not so sweet for taxpayers who pick up the tab for an academic version of Chicago-style patronage.
So much for trusting this once proud institution of higher learning. The fix is in. For some people, that is.
